CONFERENCE WITH ARMY COMMANDER AND M.G.G.S. at 5 p.m. on 15th July, 1918. ------ After explaining to the Army Commander the situation in the neighbourhood of Monument Wood, the existence of the Mound in square V.1., and my proposals for further exploitation, easterly, along the Warfusee railway, also the attitude of the French on our right flank - he agreed to the following plan of action: 1. The trench line captured by us to-day, from U.5 cent. to U.6. cent., is to be jointly held by us and the French as an "international trench", the French digging that portion which crosses No Man's Land. 2. We are to induce the French, with our help, to work southward down Stamboul Trench and Craft Trench, with a view to seizing and holding it. After the occupation of this trench, the French are to be 3. asked to take it over and hold it without our help. The French will also take over and hold, without our help, the trench from U.5 cent, to the junction of Stamboul and Syria trenches, this section then becoming merely a C.T. 4. We will then hold only the portion from the last-named intersection as far East as U.6. cent., as an "internation¬ al trench". 5. The French to have suggested to them that they should shorten their line by establishing a line of posts from the southern end of Craft Trench, south-westerly to their salient in U.16.a., North of Hangard Wood. 6. Our final objective line is to run from U.6. cent.,
2. easterly to V.1.b.6.5. and thenne north-easterly to join our present front line at the Warfusee Road at P.27.c.2.5. The territory enclosed by this objective line which is still unoccupied by us, is to be taken by a process of minor operations and offensive patrolling, employing no resources beyond those at the disposal of the "A" Division. This objective line is to represent the furthest advance to the eastward and south-eastward that we are to make for the time being, and we will consolidate on this line and organize defences thereon. 7. All negotiations with the French troops, to ensure their co-operation will, for the time being, be made by the "A Divisional Commander direct with the Regimental and Divisional Commander of the French on the immediate flank, seeing that the Army Commander considers it hopeless to induce the French Army Command expressly to order these operations and arrangements. SCREEN CALIBRATION Notes on the medning and use of the informatton given im the Report issued for each piece after Calibration. The Information given. (c) The M.V. developed by the piece at 600 F. Charge Temperature with the propellant stated. (6) The angular measurement in minutes of the effect produced by the combination of Jump and Droop. This is the angle between the line of departure and the line of the Clinometer Plane before fring. It is found that the combined Jump and Droop effect varies with each individual piece. In the case of pieces for which the Range Table allows for a certain jump, the angle given on the Calibration Report is the difference between the angle measured while calibrating and the Jump angle given in the Range Table. Ecample: — In the case of a 4.5" Howitzer the combined Jump and Droop angle as measured on the Calibration Range was - 30 mins. when fring with5th charge. The Range Table allows for a jump of - 32 mins. The angle given in the Calibra- tion Report for this gun with this charge would be 2 mins. 2. To use the Information correctly. Before using the M.V. given in calculating rections, allowance must be made for the com bined Jump and Droop angle given in the Calibration Report. 15731.2 3. To apply the Information to the Gun. (a) With the 18-pr. gun; by an adjustment of the Range Indicator. Presuming that the sights have been tested and are in correct adjustment. Set the Sight Clinometer at zero and level the bubble by means of the handwheel on the left of the carriage. Place a tested Field Clinometer on the Clinometer plane of the gun, set at the angle given in the Calibration Report" as that for combined Jump and Droop, but at elevation when such angle is a minus angle, and level the bubble by means of the handwheel on the right of the carriage. The Range Indicator will not now read zero, and itshould be adjusted to do so, care being taken not to touch either of the handwheels on the carriage in the pro¬ cess. After the adjustment the usual arrangements must be made for the detection of any slipping of the Range Indicator from that adjustment. The combined Jump and Droop angle for each gun miust be recorded and taken into consideration in testing sights after the above adjustment has been made. 1b) With the 4.5" Howitzer. The angle given in the "Calibration Report" as that for combined Jump and Droop varies for different charges with the same gun. Alowance for the combined Jump and Droop effect cannot therefore be made by an adjustment to the sights, and must beallowed for by treating it as an additional correction to be applied, making use of the column in the Range Table which gives the alteration to the Point of Impact by 5 mins. elevation. "A" Division.

French are digging (red) C.T. across N.M.L.

Enemy has evacuated Stamboul Trench to E & W. road.

We hold red dotted line in E. of Mont. Wood

Excellent field of fire from here, - up to 1000 x

Old enemy front line was a summit & gave excellent view to N.W. & W.

toward Gentilles &.

Mound at S of Ry. - 300x long x 150x wide x 30' high

must become ours. -

Covered with low shrubs

My proposed line shown dotted - would be 4400x as

against present 4800x

Good field of fire certain along its whole length.

Entertain no doubt we can possess ourselves of whole objective

by penetration, without a set-piece attack, within a week

from date. -

Proposals.

(a) We to hold, jointly with French,

from International Post to 6 Central

(b) We to help French to take Craft Trench

(c) after seizure of Craft trench, French to take over

from 5 central to old enemy front line - as it

will become only a C.T.

(d) we to then hold jointly with French, from old
