G.H.Q.
- I beg to submit for the approval of the Commander-in-
Chief the following proposals for an offensive on the Australian
Corps front.
2. The accompanying map shows -
in black the approximate present British and French front line;
in red the proposed final objective for the Australian Corps;
in blue the proposed final objective for the French Corps'
3. The advantages of this operation will be :-
(a) the deepening of our defences E. of Villers Bretonneux;
(b) the ejection of the enemy from the Monument and the
remainder of the high ground which he still holds
in P.31;
(c) maintaining the initiative of the Australian Corps
which is at present faced by divisions whose moral
is very much shaken.
4. The capture of the Australian Cops objective will entail
the employment of one brigade of infantry of the 2nd Australian
Division with three battalions in the front line, and one battalion
in immediate support on the Monument Wood Flank. An additional
battalion of the 2nd Australian Division would be placed at the
disposal of the Brigade to deal with any emergency.
5. It is proposed to emply tanks in order to reduce
casualties to the Infantry. It is considered that one battalion
should be held in readiness for employment as supports, reserves,
and for counter-attacks. Probably 21 or 24 Tanks will be sufficient
in the actual advance with the Infantry.
6. It is also proposed to employ a creeping artillery
barrage. Nine brigades of field artillery would be required all
of which could be provided from Army resources, provided those
resources are not reduced before the day of the attack. The
necessary heavy artillery can be proved from Army resources.
7. Owing to reliefs and other reasons, the date proposed
by the Australian Corps for this operation is the 17th July,
with which I concur.
8. As regards action by the French, I interviewed General
Debeney yesterday. I understand from him that the proposes to make
an attack on the high ground on the left bank of the Avre between
Castel and Moreuil some day this week. If his is successful, and
especially if the Australian operation is successful, I think he
will be prepared to carry out an attack against the objectives
marked in blue 3 or 4 days after the Australian attack. I am very
anxious that he should carry out this attack, as it will reduce
the frontage to be held by the right division of the Australian
Corps by 1,500 yards wich is of very considerable importance to the
Corps. As he seemed somewhat reluctant at first to undertake this
operation, I promised him the assistance of some tanks, which I
trust will meet with the Commander-in-Chief's approval.
9. It was at first suggested that the attach by the Australian
