GENERAL STAFF. G.H.O. & ARMY G.S. FOURTH ARMY. No. 190 (G). SE CRET L. 715. Date 28/6/18. G.H.2. 1. In reply to your O.A.D. 878 of 27/6/18, and with reference to the C.-in-C's. remarks on the proposed plan of operations submitted to you under my No. 190 (G) of 23.6.18. Leave has been obtained from American G.H.Q. through the American II Corps to employ the equivalent of Since one battalion of American Infantry with the 4th Australian The proviso made was that not more than the Division. increased verbally equivalent of one battalion was to be employed and that by 6 Cos. units were to be commanded by their own officers. Details of the manner in which the American Infantry are to be dis- tributed amongst Australian Units are now being arranged between G.O.C. 33rd American Division and G.O.C. Australian Corps. The situation as regards tanks will be as follows 3. according to the latest arrangements made by G.O.C. Australian which I have approved:- Corps, of Five companies of Mk. V. Tanks will take part in the attacks (60 tanks), 42 in front line and 18 in reserve following up to replace casualties. G.O.C. Australian Corps considers that this is sufficient, and I agree. This leaves one battalion complete as reserve in III Corps Area and one company in Australian area. 4. I am communicating with General Salmond, R.A.F. as regards what number of bombing machines he can place at my disposal. In the plan submitted to the C.-in-C. I stated in para. 9 (a) that there would be no creeping barrage. This has since been modified by G.O.C. Australian Corps at the request of the Divisional and Brigade Commanders who are taking part in the attack. They have asked particularly that there shall be a creeping barrage, and I have agreed. The proposal is that the barrage shall fall at zero on the enemy's front line, and remain there for four minutes while the infantry and tanks move up close to it. At zero - 4 the barrage will creep forward at the rate of 100 yards per two minutes, the pace decreasing slightly, until, when nearing the furthest objective it will be four minutes per 100 yards. The ground is very hard and not much cut about. The pace of the barrage is not yet definitely fixed, and trials with the tanks and infantry are being carried out daily at VAUX to determine the most suitable pace. (Sd) H.RAWLINSON H.Q.
