COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE.
20th. June, 1918.
PERSONAL.
Dear General :-
I wish to supplement my cable, congratulating you on the
appointment to the Command of the Australian Army Corps, by expressing
my pleasure at the selection which has been made, and
my confidence that the choice will be justified.
From the inception of the War, in the case of General
BRIDGES, and later with General BIRDWOOD, it has been their practice
and mine, by means of private and personal letters, to deal
with many matters which cannot well be the subject of Official
correspondence. This enables both myself and the Commander to
keep in close personal touch, and enables me particularly to deal
more intelligently with many questions that come up officially
from time to time. I shall be glad, therefore, if when you can
get the opportunity, you will write to me fully on any matters
affecting the A.I.F., so that I may know your mind, and thus be
able to deal more effectually with the recommendations which you
may send forward from time to time.
Wishing you every success,
Yours faithfully,
G.F. Pearce
