no additional defensive depth of average 225 yards on a

frontage of 1000 yards, to on the east of Villers-Bretonneux

aaa New posts Connecting up of above posts and

wiring of new line same is proceeding. - aaa

addressed Aust. Corps, repeated 5th Aust Div

and 37th French Division. -

THIRD AUSTRALIAN DIVISION.

Divisional Headquarters,

25th. May, 1918.

My dear General, -

I have returned herewith the original letter

of Madame FURSY. - Unfortunately the envelope which contained

it has been mislaid. - The fact that the lady addressed you

as the resident of the Chateau at HEILLY is really the only

thing to definitely connect the writer with the ownership of

this Chateau. -

I have made exhaustive inquiries into the

writer's complaints, and have elicited the following facts :-

Captain GARD, Staff Captain, and M' MIGNO,

Interpreter, of the 11th. Aust. Inf. Brigade, arrived in

HEILLY about 6.0 a.m. on March 27th., - at least 1½ hours in

advance of any Australian troops. - They at once went to this

Chateau, and found it occupied by the staff of Brigadier-General

HEADLAM who was commanding a mixed force, holding the line of

the ANCRE. - The Chateau was then already in a very neglected

state; judging by appearances, it had been vacated by civilians

and used as a Headquarters for some time before. - Apparently

very little care had been taken of the Chateau, and it was

remarked that every article of furniture which bore a lock had
