THIRD AUSTRALIAN DIVISION.
Divisional Headquarters,
25th. May, 1918.
My dear General, -

thing to definitely connect the writer with the ownership of
this Chateau. -
I have made exhaustive inquiries into the
writer's complaints, and have elicited the following facts :-

Interpreter, of the 11th. Aust. Inf. Brigade, arrived in
HEILLY about 6.0 a.m. on March 27th., - at least 1½ hours in
advance of any Australian troops. - They at once went to this
Chateau, and found it occupied by the staff of Brigadier-General
HEADLAM who was commanding a mixed force, holding the line of
the ANCRE. - The Chateau was then already in a very neglected
state; judging by appearances, it had been vacated by civilians
and used as a Headquarters for some time before. - Apparently
very little care had been taken of the Chateau, and it was
remarked that every article of furniture which bore a lock had
