General Sir John Monash, Personal Files Book 17, 11 February - 18 March 1918, Part 2

Headquarters,
87th Infantry Brigade,
12th Feb. 1918.
Dear General,
When may I come over and bring two Commanding
Officers with me to see a full dress demonstration with Varley
bombs and Varley Biddoulph ∧German Rifle Grenades ?
My Division do not believe in smoke, but General
de Lisle is prepared to believe once I can show him. So I would
like to bring over also my STrench Mortar man, then we could later
put up a show with our own Trench Mortars for Greneral de Lisle.
Do you think Varley could give us a show just
below your headquarters like he did sometime ago when you were
last at Ravelsberg, but in addition demonstrate with the smoke
Rifle Grenade ?
Would you allow the good old 3rd Pioneers to make
us 600 bomgbs in case we want to use them for a little show?
Would you allow our own Divisional Pioneers to
visit your pioneers to learn the system of manufacture?
I hate to worry you in this way, but feel it is best
to write directly and hope you will not dream of answering, but just
get Paul to write me a note saying yes, or no, and quoting suitable
times and dates.
I would also very much like to take the Commanding
Officers whom I bring down with me to see how you are running
your platoon competitions. In this Division they have not started
or thought about them yet and the time is getting on.
Yours truly, V. Sincerely
G.H. JacksonBrig-Gen.Commanding 87th Inf. Brigade.

Divisional Headquarters,
14th. February, 1918.
My dear Jackson,
Your letter of the 12th. instant just received. -
Of course, the reply to all your questions is Yes and I shall
immediately put in hand arrangements to carry your wishes into
effect; and will let you know as soon as possible how soon we can
be ready, so that you can select dates to suit yourself. -
The only matter in your list of which I shall not
be able to give you much of value is in regard to the Platoon
Competitions. - Everybody at this end of the Show has gone crazy
on Defensive Works, and the whole of my man-power has been so
concentrated on working parties that we have been able to do very
little in regard to this matter. -
However, it is possible that one or two battalions
of the 11th. Brigade may be able to show something worth looking at. -
I shall get JESS to write you as soon as he has seen
the people concerned with a view to arranging for your visit. -
Yours very sincerely,
Brig.-General G. H. N. Jackson, C.M.G., D.S.O.
Commanding 87th. Infantry Brigade,
29th. Division. B.E.F.
Lt Col. Jess

√ (a) See Varley & Biddulph & fix it all up.
√ (b) See Pioneers i re Manufacture of 600 bombs
ii re teaching 29th Div. Pioneers
(c) arrange dates for the demonstration, -

(d) remind me to invite Brudenall White, who
who has never seen this stunt
(e) give me dates & data to write again
to Jackson, when all is fixed up
