Copy 1/9/1917. 5th. September, 1917. My dear General, I only realized how deeply my affections were rooted with you and the Division when the break away had to be made. The inspiration of loyal devotion which you are able to sive is a personal asset which makes all ways smooth. The poorest instrument will respond unexpectedly well with a master touch, and I have felt always so fortunate to be working in your enveloping infinence. The thoughts that will always be mine of the fourteen months I have spent with Australian Troops are very happy. At first I counted my association with them a privalege, the Third Australian have made it an honour. While its spirit burns as it does now I know that success will come. Yours very sincerely, (Sed).
