LTETD AUSTRALIAN DIVISTON. Divisional Headquarters, 19th. August, 1917. DEMANSTRATION OF PROTECTED SMOKE AT THIRD AUSTRALLAN DIUISTONAL KEADQUARTERS, 21-8-17. camw 1. It will be shewn how a projected smoke barrage can be put down on the flank of attacking troops by means of the 3r Stokes fortar and other resources wholly within a Division. Such a barrage can also be put down on or behind the enemy’s frent Line, 1f desired. 2. Experiments will be carried out with the 3r smoke bomb - (a) under water, 1.e. after falling in a wet shell hole.- (b) when buried, 1.e. having fallen into mud. 5. The Object, Evolution, Possibilities and Employment of the 3r bomb will be briefly erplained.

DEMONSTRATION OF PROJECTED SMOKE AT THIRD AUSTRALIAN DIVISIONAL

HEADQUARTERS, 21-8-17.

  1. It will be shown how a projected smoke barrage can be

Procedure   
Effective Screen - 10rds ^20mts rapid & then 1 ^to 3 rounds

per gun per minute.

Ranges - 300th, 450th, 575th, 740th

Advantages. 
Entirely an Infantry weapon.

Everything always available.

Tactical Employment
(a) Smoke Screen - (i) frontal (2) flank

(b) Mask S.P. or M.G.

especially if in Concrete emplacements
Use of "Gas" with "Smoke".

Disadvantages.
Special labour to prepare - Pioneers.
Stoked bomb case expensive.

  1. Herewith Time Tables of Trains and allotment of accommodation.

2. 11th Australian Infantry Brigade will detail an Entraining

Officer for each train to report to Divisional Representative

at Entraining Station one (1) hour before departure of

each personnel train, and three (3) hours before departure of

of each Omnibus Train. Transport will report at Entraining

Station three (3) hours before departure of train.

3. Troops proceeding by personnel trains will be at Entraining

Station fifty (50) minutes before departure.
