The British & Australian soldiers in this part of the world have
not taken very long to Anglicize all local names, & so
firmly has the habit of mispronunciation seized upon everybody
[[that]] even the French Interpreters of the Civil Population are regularly
adopting the new pronunciation. - If you wish to ask your way
you must, on order to make yourself understood, adopt the current

modern pronunciation; thus: – "Gris Pot" becomes "Grease Pot",
"Ploegesteert" is "Plug Street"; – "L'Hallobean" is Known only as
"Hullabaloo"; "Ypres" is referred to as "Wipers"; "Saille" is
naturally "Sally"; "Hooge" is recognizable in "Huge". – "Steenje"
is called "Stingy"; "Fournes" becomes "Furnace"; and
"Steenkweert" is of course "Stinkwort". - "Houplines" could
[[?]] be other than "Hoop Lines".- "Rolanderie" (a farm) is

Known as "Rolands Dairy"; "Erquinhem" is pronounced
"[[?]]Kingham".- "Armentieres" is "Armantears". "Wytschaeta"
is referred to as "Witchety"; "Poperinghe" is "Pop Ring" and
"Bailleul" is "Bally Ool".-
