Sir John Monash, Personal Files Book 15, 10 June - 31 July 1917, Part 10
26/6/17
The British & Australian soldiers in this part of the world have
not taken very long to Anglicize all local names, & so
firmly has the habit of mispronunciation seized upon everybody
[[that]] even the French Interpreters of the Civil Population are regularly
adopting the new pronunciation. - If you wish to ask your way
you must, on order to make yourself understood, adopt the current
modern pronunciation; thus : – "Gris Pot" becomes "Grease Pot",
"Ploegesteert" is "Plug Street"; – "L'Hallobean" is Known only as
"Hullabaluo" ; "Ypres" is referred to as "Wipers" ; "Saille" is
naturally "Sally" ; "Hooge" is recognizable in "Huge". – "Steenje"
is called "Stingy" ; "Fournes" becomes "Furnace" ; and
"Steenkweert" is of course "Stinkwort". - "Houplines" could
[[?]] be other than "Hoop Lines".- "Rolanderie" (a farm) is
Known as "Rolands Dairy" ; "Erquinhem" is pronounced
"[[?]]Kingham".- "Armentieres" is "Armantears". "Wytschaeta"
is referred to as "Witchety"; "Poperinghe" is "Pop Ring" and
"Bailleul" is "Bally Ool".-
