My dear General.-
In reply to your note of even date, I am of opinion
that the time fixed should be 3-0 am; my reasons
are as follows:-
(1) Observations which I have had made show that
even when there is no moon, the movement of a man is
plainly visible, at 200yds, 1½ hours before the scheduled
time of sunrise
(2) On the date in question, there will be a bright
moon, just after full moon, which will, between
3&4 am, be near its zenith position, - at an altitude
of about 20 degrees.-
(3) Sunrise on the date will be (local time) 4-41;
there should therefore be ample light at 3 o'clock;
improving every minute.-
(4) To go over one hour before dawn will be a
sufficient variation of previous methods to involve
a good chance of suprise
(5) The time chosen should be an even clock
time, in order to facilitate time calculations.-
Yours Sincerely
Sgd J MONASH
Lt Gen Sir A. J. Godley
