1. The attached agenda paper is forwarded to you in
continuation of preliminary instructions for Battalion
Raid issued under my No. G 6/1 on 17th inst.
FRONT TO BE DEALT WITH
2. The front to be dealt with extends from C.29.a.35.10
on the South to C.23.c.90.25. on the North. Second line
from C.29.a.70.00. to C.23.d.10.20. Third line from
C.29.c.77.95 to C.23.d.33.20.
DEPTH OF PENETRATION
3. The raiders will penetrate to the third line.
ARTILLERY PROGRAMME
4. The C.R.A. will submit programme for Artillery work
indicating what trenches can be engaged simultaneously.
WIRE CUTTING
5. Gaps in the wire will be cut at the following points. -
C.29.a.40.30., C.29.a.60.50., C.29.a.75.80., and
C.23.c.90.08. Arrangements will also be made to deal
with wire behind the front and support lines. Wire
cutting will be proceeded with forthwith.
ALLOTMENT OF PARTIES
6. One company will be allotted to each gap at which
3 platoons will enter in platoon waves. The fourth
platoon will be available for covering work, handling
prisoners and wounded, parapet work, message carrying, &c.
One platoon of the three entering will be detailed to
deal with its allotted portion of the first line, another
with the second line, and another with the third line.
Detailed instructions regarding this will be issued by
the O.C. Raid. He will also arrange for the necessary
stops and Communication Trench Parties, but the Platoon
organization will be adhered to as far as possible.
TIME OF RAID
7. The raid will be carried out on a foggy day or under
cover of darkness.
SMOKE BARRAGE
8. The advisability of using smoke barrages on flanks
will be considered.
DISTINGUISHING MARKS
9. Each Platoon will wear a distinguishing mark showing
whether for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd line work.
DUGOUTS
10. The O.C. Raid will have his dugout in the vicinity of
No. 10 Locality. C.R.E. will select exact position forthwith
in consultation with Lieut-Col. DAVIS, and will
proceed with the necessary construction work.

He will arrange 2 dugouts, 1 for Lieut-Colonel
DAVIS and the Artillery Liaison Officer, and 1 for
the Signal Officer, Lieut-Col. DAVIS'S 2nd in Command
and understudy to Artillery Liaison Officer. These
dug-outs will be 5.9" proof.
BURIED CABLE
11. O.C. Div. Signal Co. and C.R.E. will arrange to
have necessary cable buried right up to these dugouts.
See para. 12 of G 6/1 of 17/1/17.
MAPS OF AREA TO BE RAIDED
12. G.S. "I" of the Division will issue large scale
maps of the area to be raided, allowing for 1 to be
handed to each officer. The map will include NO MAN'S
LAND and our front line trench. It will be checked
with most recent photographs before issue. Scale will
be 1/5,000
REPLICA TRENCHES
13. C.R.E. will prepare a similar map on a larger
scale for marking out replica trenches on the ground.
It will be checked and compared with the Divisional
1/5,000 map.
C.R.E. will then arrange with 10th Inf. Brigade
to have the trenches put on to the Training area.
This must be done at the very earliest date possible.
MOVING ALONG COMMUNICATIONS TRENCHES
14. If, after entering the enemy's trenches, there is
the least difficulty in moving up communication trenches,
Platoons will go over the top. C.R.A. will arrange wire-cutting
behind the line accordingly. Viz.- in the
vicinity of communication trenches.
ALLOTMENT OF TASKS
15. Platoons should be told off to their allotted
tasks forthwith.
EXITS FROM OUR TRENCHES
16. The O.C. Raid will notify 9th Inf. Brigade where
he wishes exits prepared for raiders to leave our
trenches.
GAPS IN WIRE TO BE KEPT OPEN
17. The 9th Inf. Brigade will arrange to keep gaps
open as wire cutting proceeds.
WIRE CUTTING DIVERSIONS
18. Wire cutting for other minor raids will serve
as diversions for this larger enterprise.
