French official communiqué, midnight June 4th.
In Argonne, an attempt of the Germans
on one of the small French posts at Courtes-
Chausses has been repulsed.
On the left bank of Meuse artillery
activity intensified on both sides during day in
region of Hill 304, and preparations for
attack were noted in German trenches
and checked by French curtain fire.
On the right bank of Meuse the
Germans continue to bombard the French
positions at Vaux-Damloup, and, with
particular violence, the fort of Vaux.
A German attack lasting nearly 15 hours
on the borders of the Bois Fumini, to the
north-west of the fort was stopped by French
machine guns. The fire of French heavy
artillery has seriously damaged 3 German
batteries in the wood of Caurieres. Some

German reinforcements have been shelled &
dispersed in Caillette wood.
Aviation - About noon to day a number
of German aeroplanes threw several bombs
on Toul. Six persons were killed & 12 wounded.
The material damage is of little importance.
No military establishments have suffered.
The French air squadron at Toul, having taken
the air immediately, gave vigorous chase to
the German aeroplanes. One of these latter
fell in the French lines at Sanzey, (12 kilos
north of Toul), two other German machines
hit by the French aeroplane's machine-
guns made a rapid descent in the
German lines.
