With reference to raid to be carried out by the 4th
Australian Infantry Brigade on the night of 2/3 July at
I.26.b.8½.7½. the following arrangements have been made:-
(1) Smoke will be discharged under arrangements
to be made by G.O.C. 4th Australian Infantry Brigade from the vicinity
of Bridoux Salient at zero time. The Right Group Artillery are
combining an artillery diversion with this discharge of smoke.
(2) At zero time two 2" Trench Mortars will engage
the hostile salient in I.26.c. with a view to keeping down
machine gun fire. Details will be arranged by D.T.M.O. in
conjunction with the O.C. Right Group Artillery.
(3) The O.C. Right Group Artillery has arranged to engage
the hostile salient at I.26.d.2.5. at the same time with the same
object.
(4) The G.O.G. 6th Inf. Brigade has arranged to deal
with the enemy parapets from the railway at I.21.c. up to and
including the S.W. corner of German House. For this purpose he
will obtain all the now long range Stokes ammunition which he can
from the 4th Aust. Inf. Brigade. His Stokes Mortar will be ready
to fire 5 minutes after zero time in order to keep down hostile
machine gun fire which may open on the raiding party. The decision
as to whether he opens fire at 5 minutes after zero or waits for
targets is left to him.
(5) At 5 minutes/after zero time if the weather conditions
are suitable smoke will be emitted from our front trench under
arrangements to be made by the G.O.C. 6th Inf. Bde. at the
following points I.15.d., I.16.c., I.16.Central., to I.6.b.1½.2½. On
this last sector gas will be mixed with the smoke. Twenty cylinders
have been placed in position. The New Zealand Division have
agreed to xxx issue smoke from I.10.d. and I.11.c. and gas from
near Porte Egal at the same time, namely 5 minutes after zero
time.
(6) The Left Artillery Group will take advantage of the
smoke and gas to inflict casualties on the enemy, using guns not
required for the main operation.
(7) The details of artillery and infantry action for the
main operation will be in accordance with instructions already
issued to all concerned by G.O.C. B.A. and G.O.C. 4th Aust. Inf.
Bde.
(8) The decision as to whether to emit smoke and gas on
the 6th Brigade front will be made by the G.O.C. 6th Aust. Inf. Bde.
advised by R.E.Technical experts. He will communicate his decision
to Divisional Headquarters as xxxxxx early as possible repeating
it to the 4th Aust. Inf. Bde. in order that the latter may conform.
The code will be "Smoking Concert as arranged" or "No Smoking
Concert".
The G.O.C. 4th Aust. Inf. Bde. will notify Divisional
Headquarters with regard to zero time as early as possible
informing them at the same time what other units and formations have been
notified.

1. At a time and date to be notified later, a raid will be made
on the enemy's trench at I.26.b.8½.7½. by the 14th Battalion,
for the purpose of
(a) Taking prisoners
(b) Inflicting casualties
(c) Capturing machine guns, etc.
(d) Destroying emplacements and dugouts.
(e) Gaining information.
2. The supporting Artillery will be the Centre Group, reinforced
by One 2" Trench Mortar Battery
1½ 18pdr batteries )
1 - section, 4.5" Howitzers) Left Group.Left section xxthbattery 17th Battery)
10th battery enfilading section ) Right Group.
Lieut. Colonel W. H. Lloyd, D.S.O., will command.
3. Diversions will be made by the right and left groups, under
the command of Lieut. Colonel Cohen, and Lieut. Colonel
Grimwade, respectively.
4. The action of the supporting artillery is laid down in task
tables separately issued. ANZAC Heavy Artillery are
co-operating. The action of right group diversions is set
out in the task table attached.
5. All times will be calculated from ZERO. At Zero, the right
diversion will commence. At 0.5 the Left diversion and main
bombardment will commence. At 0.10 the main barrage will be
placed and the assault commence.
6. Zero time will be communicated to all concerned by the following
code message :-
"OFFICERS GOING ON LEAVE WILL REPORT AT........ACKNOWLEDGE."
This message will if possible be sent by D.R.L.S.
7. When our Infantry have left the enemy's trench, and are at
such a distance from the enemy's trench, that our artillery
can, with safety, be directed on to the front trench, the
O.C. Attack will pass back the word "OUT". This will be
immediately transmitted to all concerned. Batteries will
then direct their fire as laid down in Phase III (Task Table).
The supplementary signal for Phase III, in case of a
breakdown in telephonic communication, will be three green Very
lights, fired by O.C. Attack, and repeated by "A" Battalion,
4th Infantry Brigade, from trench 52.
8. The order "CEASE FIRE" will be given by the C.O., 4th Infantry
Brigade, and will be immediately transmitted to all
concerned. The supplementary signal for "CEASE FIRE" will be
two blue rockets fired by O.C. Attack, and repeated by "A"
Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, from trench 52.
9. Watches will be synchronised by this Office at 9 p.m.

0.8 Main lift commences.
0.10. Main barrage will be placed and assault
takes place.
11. Two full wagons of ammunition per 18-pdr battery will be
ready to move in the wagon lines at the forward wagon
position at the hour of commencement of operations. Two
full wagons or the 106th Howitzer Battery will similarly
be ready at the same hour at its wagon line.
12. Acknowledge.
13. Two 2" Trench Mortars and 5th Brigade Stokes Mortars will
co-operate on I.31.c.8.½. to I.31.d.3.3. The 5th A.I.B.
will also throw smoke bombs.

1 section 18 pdr. Battery Right Group.
