the situation and extent of the ground to be passedover
by our party - both going and returning.
ACTION OF
ARTILLERY

At 0.05 Zero time LEFT DIVERSION and
BOMBARDMENT OF GROUND to be attacked
simultaneously.
SECOND PHASE. At 0.08 Zero time, Artillery and Mortar
fire lifts from Central Zone of front trenches to be
attacked.

shortens back to hostile front trenches.
Artillery section ceases upon message
"CEASE FIRE'' from Commander, or upon 'CEASE FIRE''
Signal, which is two blue rockets.
For fuller details of Artillery section
see Appendix C.
Prior to the night of the attack, the
artillery will cut the hostile wire at several places,
including the place of entry.
ACTION BY RAIDING
PARTY
11. (a) SCOUTS leave cur trenches l¼ hours before
Zero time (by Sally Port which is being constructed
in Trench 58) guiding main body along drain 30
to the COUREAU RIVER and later up to and through
the hostile wire. After entry of Raiders, Scouts
breach hostile parapet and make ramp to facilitate
exit, lay luminous tape to guide party back, and
examine listening post near point of entry.
(b) MAIN BODY leaves our trenches at same Sally
Port one hour before Zero time, and follows Scouts.
(c) RIGHT & LEFT BOMBING PARTIES after entry
clear the trenches for 30 yds from point of entry.
RIGHT & LEFT PARAPET PARTIES move along
hostile parapet to deal with enemy attempting to come
over surface of ground between Support and Front
Trenches, or attempting to come in from the flanks.
RIGHT BLOCKING PARTY advances not more than 25
yards along communication trench just to right of point
of entry, and raids any dug-outs therein.
LEFT BLOCKING PARTY advances not more than 25
yards along communication trench abut 10 yards
left of point of entry and blocks it.
INTELLIGENCE MEN search enemy dead and dug-outs
MACHINE GUNNERS & ENGINEERS search for and
capture or destroy machine guns, trench mortars, etc.
(e) COVERING PARTIES follow main body and take up
--4--
previously selected positions in "No Man's Land" to
right and left of line of approach, to cover the
withdrawal; they will be the last to come in.
WITHDRAWAL
12. Main Body remains in hostile trenches not longer than ten
minutes, but may be withdrawn earlier by O. C. Main
Body. Signal by O.C. Main Body for withdrawal will be
the verbal message "OUT' (called out repeatedly),
conveyed by the runners and simultaneously confirmed by the
firing of three green Very lights in quick succession.
Withdrawal must be rapid, because Artillery will commence
to shorten three minutes after above signal.
O.C. Main Body must decide whether to halt his party
in "No Man's Land" and wait there, sending back a message
from there to the Commander when he wishes our Artillery
to stop, or whether to make back to our trenches at once.
ROLL CALL
13. Commander will hand xx O.C. "B' Battalion a complete
nominal roll of all personnel who are to leave cur
trenches. The latter will establish a "roll call"
station in rear of Trench 57, which must be known to all
concerned. After withdrawal, all members of the raiding
party will, as they come in, at once repair to their
roll call station, to have their names ticked off, then
breaking off to their billets. C.0. "D" Battalion will
transmit to Brigade H.Q. full particulars of numbers of
officers and others thus reported back or otherwise.
WATCHES.
