SECOND ARMY
O.A. 94.
The following note on experience gained during a recent
raid is forwarded for your information.
The raiding party, after successfully entering the enemy's
trench, sent one party down the trench to the right and one to
the left, killing some of the enemy and bombing dugouts. Both
parties were stopped after going about 40 yards by blocks,
composed of sandbags and revetted with wood. Neither party was
able to proceed further than the block. The enemy's trenches
were 8 feet deep revetted with wood and no firestep was seen.
The communication round the blocks appeared to be by means
of dugouts; if this is xxx so, exits from dugouts should be
carefully watched during raids, otherwise part of the raiding
force may be cut off in rear.
(Sd) L.E.KIGGELL,
Lieut-General,
Chief of the General Staff.
