23216 CONFIDENTIAL. [S.S. 332A). AMENDMENTS, ETC., TO MEMORANDUM REGARDING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HONOURS DESPATCH, issued 17th December, 1915, No. C.D.S. 332. Paragraph 2. The distribution of Army Form W8121 having now been made, it is the only one which will be accepted by the Military Secretary. Further supplies of the form may be had by applying to the Base Stationery Depot. The use of unofficial copies will not be recognised under any circumstances. Paragraph 3. Referring to para. 8 (a), it is notified that acting warrant officers are not elegible for the award of the Military Cross. Several instances occurred in connection with the last despatch where warrants officers were recommended by the Commander in- Chief for that decoration, but when it was discovered that the rank was only acting, the recommendation could not be considered. It is against the interests of N.C.O.'s when their proper rank is not correctly stated. Delete para. 8. (c). Substitute Care should be taken by the officer making the recom- mendation, to describe accurately the Unit to which officers and men recommended belong. If a Special Reserve or Territorial Unit, the fullest description should be stated. R.F.A. T.F. R.E. is not a sufficient description. The name of the Territorial Unit, FF. A.S.C such as: R.A.M.C. T.F. "West Riding Brigade, Wessex Field Company, Northumbrian Division, Welsh Field Ambulance, etc., should be clearly stated. The object of this is so that the name can be sent at once to the Record Office concerned for verification. Paragraph 6. Line l. For person read officer, and after immediate reward insert of the D.S.O. Paragraph 8. Delete sub-paragraph (6). Sub-paragraph (c). Delete and if this is desired it should be so stated Paragraph 9. The spirit of this paragraph should be strictly adhered to. Much heartburning! and correspondence will be avoided as the result. Paragraph 11. This paragraph appears not to have been clearly understood. It is meant to imply that IF A PERSON RECEIVED AN HONOUR IN THE LAST DESPATOH it is not likely that he will be considered for another in the next despatch. This does not preclude anyone from being mentioned in the next despatch. If an officer or man was recommended in the last despatch for recognition and did not receive such, his name is NOT to be re-submitted for recognition for the same specific act or for the same services. (It is obvious that the case was considered and was ruled out, either on account of the standard required not having been reached, or for other reasons). Should the officer or man have rendered subsequent good service, there is no reason why the previous good service should not be referred to. Paragraph 1S. Line 4. For battery substitute brigade. Add R.A.M.C. to Divisional Troops and Corps Troops. It is again notified that recommendations of our Allies are not to be sent in for consideration with the list for an Honours Gazette. They should be submitted when called for. TECK, Brigadier-General, Military Secretary. GENERAL HEADOUARTERS, 23rd February, 1916. GFATTONERY SERVICRS PRESS A-DIS SHI-TOOO

AMENDMENTS, ETC., TO MEMORANDUM REGARDING
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HONOURS DESPATCH,
issued 17th December, 1915, No. C.D.S. 332.
Paragraph 2. The distribution of Army Form W 3121 having now been made, it is the
only one which will be accepted by the Military Secretary. Further supplies of the form may
be had by applying to the Base Stationery Depot.
The use of unofficial copies will not be recognised under any circumstances.
Paragraph 3. Referring to para. 3 (a), it is notified that acting warrant officers are
not elegible for the award of the Military Cross.
Several instances occurred in connection with the last despatch where warrants officers
were recommended by the Commander-in-Chief for that decoration, but when it was discovered
that the rank was only "acting," the recommendation could not be considered.
It is against the interests of N.C.O.'s when their proper rank is not correctly stated.
Delete para. 3. (c). Substitute "Care should be taken by the officer making the recommendation,
to describe accurately the Unit to which officers and men recommended belong."
If a Special Reserve or Territorial Unit, the fullest description should be stated.
"R.F.A.     T.F."}
"R.E.         T.F."} is not a sufficient description.  The name of the Territorial Unit,

"A.S.C.      T.F"} such as:—

"R.A.M.C. T.F."}
"West Riding Brigade,"
"Wessex Field Company,"
"Northumbrian Division,"
"Welsh Field Ambulance," etc.,
should be clearly stated.
The object of this is so that the name can be sent at once to the Record Office concerned
for verification.
Paragraph 6. Line l. For "person" read "officer", and after "immediate reward"
insert "of the D.S.O."
Paragraph 8. Delete sub-paragraph (b).
Sub-paragraph (c). Delete "and if this is desired it should be so stated."
Paragraph 9. The spirit of this paragraph should be strictly adhered to. Much
"heartburning" and correspondence will be avoided as the result.
Paragraph 11. This paragraph appears not to have been clearly understood. It is
meant to imply that IF A PERSON RECEIVED AN HONOUR IN THE LAST DESPATCH it is not
likely that he will be considered for another in the next despatch. This does not preclude
anyone from being "mentioned" in the next despatch.

on account of the standard required not having been reached, or for other reasons). Should
the officer or man have rendered subsequent good service, there is no reason why the previous
good service should not be referred to.
Paragraph 15. Line 4. For "battery" substitute "brigade." Add "R.A.M.C." to
Divisional Troops and Corps Troops.
It is again notified that recommendations of our Allies are not to be sent in for
consideration with the list for an Honours Gazette. They should be submitted when called for.

By the time you receive this, you will have learnt
by cable from me that I have severed my connection
with my old Brigade. What a wrench
it has been after 18 months unbroken association
with the finest force a man could be
privaleged to serve with. My own wish was
to remain with the Brigade but - - - - - -
I had to report at once & had to ride straight
away but continued to live at my old mess
until the 4th Brigade marched out yesterday
morning for the Canal. - - - - - -
I felt very much the parting from my
dear old Chief. - one of the whitest men God
ever put breath into. When you think of
all we went through together, the formation
of the Brigade from nothing, the convoy
work, the training in Egypt, the landing
at Gallipoli, the 'scrapping' there, & the
evacuation, & that not one shadow of misunderstanding
ever marred our association,
then you may realise what it
meant for me to say 'goodbye', & I think
I can honestly say what it meant for
General Monash too.

to his wife*]
