FOURTH AUSTRALIAN INFANTRY BRIGADE
TACTICAL EXERCISE : MONDAY JANUARY 31st. 1916
NARRATIVE
1. The advanced Guard ( three Battalions) of a Khaki Force, based
on and advancing from SUEZ, bivouacs at EL ED DIBAIYA on
Sunday evening January 30th. Its objective is to secure the
bridges over the EL WADI DRAIN for the passage of the Main
Body. On resuming the march on January 31st and approaching
EZ ABU BALAH information is received that a Blue Enemy Force,
strength unknown, is holding a position just South of the bridge
over drain South of EZ YUZUF ATIYA.
2. The Exercise will consist of a frontal attack on the enemy in
position, by a portion of the force, with an enveloping attack
by the remainder.
NOTES 3. The EL WADI DRAIN is impassable except at the bridges shown on
plan.
4. The enemy is represented in skeleton- each white ∧ blue flag represents
a half-company, each blue ∧ white flag represents a machine gun. These
flags will be exhibited only when and so long as a target, at
effect∧ ive ranges, presents itself.
INSTRUCTIONS
5. All Brigade Units (less duty Battalion and wheeled transport)
will march independently, to the rendezvous, which is about a xx
mile W.N.W. of the village EZ ED DIBAYAH- Time of assembly at
Rendezvous 1000.
6. The duty Battalion will furnish a party of 6 Officers and 100
other ranks to move from camp at 0900 to represent Skeleton
Enemy: Separate instructions issued.
7. DRESS:- Full marching order- waterbottles filled- midday meal
carried.
8. Machine Guns- carried on packs- with normal detachment only, to
be taken; also ammunition packs; Signallers to accompany
Battalions.
9. The duty Battalion will furnish the usual quota for Musketry
Instruction (Miniture Range and Field Firing).
10. Units must allow a half hour, additional to net marching time,
to provide for delays in crossing ISMAILIA CANAL, and EL WADI
DRAIN.
11. Operation Orders will be issued at the Rendezvous.

Umpires will be mounted and will wear white arm bands on both a
The special duty of the umpires will be to control the advance
of the firing line, having reference to:-
(a). the volume of fire directed against the advance, as
indicated by the white and blue flags.

12. (b). the efficiency of the concealment and covering fire
employed by the attack.
(c). the efficiency of the re-inforcement of the firing line.
This control will be exercised by intimating to fire unit
commanders when they must halt, when they may again advance,
and when they may advance only after being reinforced.
