SUPPLEMENTARY NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS CONNECTED WITH THE
SCHEME OF DEFENCE OF APEX. ISSUED FOR GUIDANCE OF ALL
OFFICERS AND N.C.O'S
I. Two chances of success appear open to the enemy: -
(a) To attack unexpectedly at dawn or by night.
(b) To attack after a severe Bombardment.
In the latter case, unless bombardment is very thorough
and the Reserve Machine Guns in the second line are knocked out
or disabled, it is very doubtful whether such an attack could
succeed.
II. In the event of the Turks succeeding in occupying a portion
of the front trenches, or even support trenches in the APEX, the
troops occupying trenches on the flanks of the captured portion,
and local reserves, if any, will at once commence a bomb attack
up in the trenches, and up the saps leading from the rear.
III Should this be impossible owing to a shortage of men, or some
unforeseen reason, the Brigade Reserve, or some portion of it,
will be at once sent up to the high ground, either to one
or both flanks, according to the tactical situation, and attack
with bombs to support the parties already engaged.
IV. The detachment of the Auckland Battalion(50 strong) now
garrisoning the 2nd line trench, will remain at their post, and
will not move except by te direct orders of the Brigadier.
V. It is of vital importance that the communication trenches
between the firing line and supports, and between the latter and the
Battalion Reserves are kept absolutely clear and free for all
forward movement.
Communication trenches should be earmarked separately for
forward and rearward movement, and on no account is any trench to
be used for traffic both ways.
Any possibility of a block is to be prevented at all costs.
Officers Commanding Battalions are held responsible that
this reinforcing is continually practised day and night, until
the system works like machinery.
To accustom the men to reach their fire stations quickly
in the darkness without hesitation and confusion, they are to be
made to practise this reinforcing in the daytime as well as at
night, untilxthe time taken to do it is reduced to seconds not
minutes.
VI. The most effective way of employing the Brigade Reserve
will be to send portions of it to the high ground on either
flank, whence they will be in a better position to either move
forward to counter-attack along the slopes (the horns of the
position), or even to occupy the 2nd and 3rd line trenches, which
are now either constructed or in the course of construction.
VII. To facilitate the rapid advance towards APEX of Reserve
Troops, a communication trench, running parallel with the fire
trench along the CANTERBURY SLOPE, has been constructed, thus
avoiding the necessity of using the above fire trench for
reinforcing the APEX, or for delivering a counter-attack in that
direction.
All officers and Non-Commissioned Officers of the Battalion
in Brigade Reserve will at once make themselves thoroughly
acquainted with these new fire and communication trenches in the
second line, so that they will be able to lead their men direct
