Durrants Post, 14th Battalion,
24/11/15
From: Major Lazarus
To: The Adjutant.
I wish to bring under your notice the fact that my presence here on
the Peninsula is evidently the result of a misunderstanding, The
position I accepted in the A.I.F. was that of a Commanding Officer, and
no other. When I was rung up on the telephone on the 23rd April by the
Selection Committee, Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, I was asked Will you
accept the position of Officer Commanding Reinforcements. It means the
Command of over a thousand men and O.C., Troopship? My reply was I
want command the command of a Battalion. Their reply was All positions are
filled. I therefore answered Very well, I accept. I did not accept
any other position. and never had any intention of accepting any less
position than that of a Commanding Officer. My past services and my
age, both. in my opinion. precluded my acceptance of any less position.
That I certainly had no intention of accepting such a position as that
of Company Commander is already in evidence as, when I was in Command
of Reinforcements at Broadmeadows, I was instructed to report to the
24th Battalion. When I learnt that I was offered the Command of a
Senior Company I unhesitatingly refused, and returned to my proper
appointment. I therefore respectfully request that I be immediately
relieved, and returned to Egypt as early as possible, where I can
resume the duties for which I was appointed, and which I was carrying
out before being sent here, and I think carrying out successfully.

From: Major Lazarus,
To: The Adjutant,
In furtherance of my minute of the 24th instant, I am now forced to
bring under your notice the most important factors which governed the
conditions under which I took service in this Force. On the 1st August
last I turned 54 years of age. For the past 35 years I have been a
chronic sufferer from bowel and stomach troubles. I have undergone two
operations for haemoriods haemorrnoids, have had pleurisy and Pneumonia
and am liable to a return, and under the most favouarable conditions,
of late years, have been unable to maintain a sound condition of health
even in my own home. Under these circumstances, I knew that I could
never hope to hold out in a campaign of actual battle-field, but
would not be precluded from doing other work such as I undertook. I
have and am suffering a first reminder of these disabilities, which I
regret being compelled to disclose, and would again most respectfully
ask to be returned to my work with as little delay as possible, and
while I am still comparatively fit condition, and before I become,
through illness, a tax on the State
(Sgd.) John S. Lazarus, Major.
