(1) Durrants Post, Copy. From: Major Laparus 14th. Battalion, To : the Adjutant. 34/11115. I wish to bring under your notice the fact that my presence here on the Peninsula is evidently the result of a misunderstanding. The position I accepted in the A.I.F. was that of a Commanding officer, and no other. Wen I was rung up on the telephone on the ssrd April by the Selection Committee, Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, I was asked will you accept the position of Officer Conmanding Reinforcements. 1t means the Command of over a thousand men and O.C., Troopshipr My reply was 1 want the Command of a Battalion. Their reply was All the positions are Killed. I therefore answered very well, 1 accept. I did not accept any other position, and never had any intention of accepting any less position then that of a Commanding officer. My past services and my age, both, in my opinion, preclued my acceptance of any less position. That I certainly had no intention of accepting such a position as thet of Company Commander is already in evidence as, men I was in Command of reinforcezents at Broadmeadows, 1 was instructed to report to the 24th Battalion. Wen 1 learnt that I was offered the Command of the Senior Company 1 imhesitatingly refused, and returned to my proper appointment. 1 therefore respectfully request that I be immediately relieved, and returned to Egypt as early as possible, where I can resume the duties for which I was appointed, and which I was carrying out before being sent here, and 1 think carrying out successfully. That I certainly had no intention of accepting such a position as that
