NO fire was received yesterday
from enemy 75 MM gun. Sniping on sap
at right of position was responsible
for a couple of casualties.
Every effort was made to complete
sap connecting us with N.Z. troops -
but little progress was made during
daylight. During the night 60
men under Cap^t Briers of 17^th Battⁿ
were actively engaged, with the
result that the sap is now
safe except at those places where
it leads up and down the two
slopes of the Dere. These places
require to be of excessive depth.
It will be necessary to cut
them down between three & four
feet further - i.e. to a total depth
of between eight and nine feet.
Converging fire during the night
showed that a traverse at
one point was necessary

and one was constructed
accordingly. Experience will
probably show other points at
which traverses will be necessary.
Ten chevaux des frises were drawn
for protection of this work where
it crosses the flats. These however
could not be carried through the
sap during darkness. They should
be put out tonight. Wire
has been laid in scrub in
dead ground at our end of
sap . Engineers will be required
tonight for putting out further
entanglements at this place.
300 sandbags have been used and
300 more should be supplied
for position improvement of sap.
Orders were received during the
day for gradual relief of the
Post.
Turks were very active during
night with fire.
