Capt. Shera. NZ. RE troop- reports that the
4th Aus. Bde trenches on Kaiajik Aghala
are not satisfactory yet.
He pointed out to Major Margolan the
things that were wanted, & has left
some men to assist & advise them.
To get these trenches as good as possible,
under the circumstances, is a most
urgent business.
Shera says the men cannot fire over
the parapets they have made. This
is v. dangerous to the security of
the line - & must be got right at
once. Please see to it.
I hope the sap towards the NZMR
line is being vigorously got on
with If necessary send over fresh
shifts for this from J main line

Further to my previous memo of 1100 this day
re Major Margolin's Defences:-
1. The fire trenches have been much improved
since Capt. Shera's last visit; & work thereat
continues. - I understand that 6 Sappers
will return to the post during the coming
night to further assist & supervise

2. A special gang of 30 men is detailed to work
in short reliefs at the Sap towards N.Z.M.R.
There is still 120 yards to be cut. There is nothing
to indicate that the N.Z.M.R. are digging
towards us. Progress is slow because only
few men can work at a time, & there is a good
deal of rifle & shrapnel fire over the site.

3. The wire entanglements in the DERE upstream
are capable of much improvement. They are
too near, & too narrow - not a sufficient
obstacle. - I should like the services of a
small party of engineers for this work. I can
provide the barbed wire, & labour to assist
and a covering party.

Re your report of 1610.

1. The reason the NZMR Bde are not
sapping towards you is that the
continuation of their trench is
held by the enemy, whom they
are trying to bomb out.

2. Re improvement of wire
entanglements will you please
apply to Major Shera, O.C,

authority for asking for his
assistance - General Cox's
