FORCE ORDER.
(SPECIAL).
General Headquarters,
21st April, 1915
Soldiers of France and of the King !
Before us lies an adventure unprecedented in modern war.
Together with our comrades of the Fleet we are about to force
a landing on an open beach in face of positions which have
been vaunted by our enemies as impregnable.
The landing will be made good, by the help of God and the
Navy ; the positions will be stormed, and the War brought one
step nearer to a glorious close.
"Remember" said Lord Kitchener when bidding adieu to your
Commander, "Remember, once you set foot upon the Gallipoli
Peninsula, you must fight the thing through to a finish."
The whole world will be watching our progress. Let us
prove ourselves worthy of the great feat of arms entrusted to us.
IAN HAMILTON,
General.

Transport 'A31' ("Seeangchoon")
Lemnos, 21-4-15.
Headquarters ,
N.Z.& A.Division. Col 36
I regret to report that it was not found possible to comply
with the order to attend the Conference to be held on Transport
"Minnewaska" at 9a.m. this day.
A rowing boat was launched and was in readiness at the gangway
at 8-15a.m. to take myself, Brigade Major, O.C. 14th Battalion, and
O.C. Troops of Transport "Itonus" , to the "Minnewaska". The lashing
of the boat to the gangway parted and the boat and its crew, in
spite of every effort to regain the gangway, were blown out towards
the mouth of the harbour. I believe they have succeeded in tying
up to the "Queen Elizabeth" , but, up to the time of writing, have
failed to rejoin this ship. The Master of this Transport then
declined to lower another boat on the ground that even with an
experienced crew (which, however , was not available) it would be
unsafe to attempt the passage.
H.M.S. "Queen" was then communicated with to request the favour
of the loan of the steam picquet boat, but the reply was that none
was available.
For upwards of two hours the best Signal personnel on this
Transport was engaged in attempting to communicate the gist of the
above to Transport "Lutzow" and Transport "Minnewaska", but, owing
to the thick weather, has up to now entirely failed to communicate
with either ship.
I regret very much my inability to comply with the order , and
await further instructions .
John Monash
Colonel,
Commanding Fourth (Australian) Infantry Brigade.
