CAMP, BROADMEADOWS,
16th Decr., 1914.
AW VERY URGENT.
Dear Captain Madden,
I have only just ascertained that you will be
Officer in charge of the s.s. "Ulysses", to which my Brigade
Headquarters has been allotted.
In order to enable me to make the necessary
arrangements I should be very glad to be informed what
accommodation can be provided for Brigade Head Quarters
both as regards sleeping cabins and office cabins.
As I shall be senior Officer in charge of the
whole convoy a great deal of special work will devolve
upon me and it would be very desirable that in addition
to my sleeping cabin I should have an office cabin available.
In addition to this my Brigade Major, who will be responsible
for organising and carrying out the whole of the training at
sea of some 4500 men, should also have an office cabin for
his work and papers.
The Brigade clerical staff consists of two Staff
Clerks and two Postal Clerks, and I anticipate that their
work will also be heavy both during the voyage and in anticipation
of the training after disembarkation. I consider
therefore that adequate office space for the use of the
clerical personnel is also essential.

It must be noted that this Brigade is still
in progress of work organization and equipment and cannot be put on
the same footing as a force already established, for
some time. We have to carry with us a large quantity
of files dealing with appointments, promotions and
organisation in and equipment generally, and these will
require sufficient space to be readily accessible.
I shall be glad to learn as soon as possible
what are the best arrangements that can be made to carry
on the work of convoy and Brigade administration
adequately.
With kind regards,
Yours faithfully,
Captain J.G.F. Madden,
C/o. Embarkation Committee,
Victoria Barracks,
St. Kilda Road,
MELBOURNE.
City of Ballaarat
City Hall
December 16th 1914.
Sir,
On behalf of the Mayor of the City of Ballaarat
and the Mayor of the Town of Ballaarat East, I have to
thank you for having given leave to the Ballarat members
of your Infantry Brigade to visit Ballarat on Friday,
to partake of civic hospitalities here and to say
farewell to their relatives and friends.
Your consideration in this matter is greatly
appreciated, as it was particularly desired to extend
to the members of the second Expeditionary Force the
same compliments as had been paid to the First
Expeditionary Force.
The young soldiers will be given a dinner in
the City Hall here on Friday, and there will be nothing
in the civic hospitalities that will in any way
prevent their returning to Broadmeadows by the hour
appointed by you.
Yours faithfully,
R.E. Williams
City Clerk.
