VICTORIA BARRACKS,
MELBOURNE, 15th October, 1914.
M. 169.
Dr. J.W. Barrett,
105 Collins St.
MELBOURNE.
Dear Dr. Barrett,
Your letter of the 8th instant was replied to
by my Brigade-Major during my absence from Melbourne.
I must thank you very cordially for your efforts to
provide band instruments for my command, and I am
delighted to learn that instruments for a full band
are already available.
The position as regards the Brigade under my
command is that there are four Battalions, each of
which aspires to the possession of a complete band.
The 14th Battalion, raised in Victoria, has already
acquired, by private generosity, a complete set of
band instruments but the other three Battalions,
raised respectively in New South Wales, Queensland and
West Australia, have not yet taken any steps in that
direction.
If, therefore, the set of band instruments
which you and your co-workers have been so kind as to
provide can be made available to me, I shall allot same
to one of ∧the other xx xxx Battalions of the Brigade.
I have already instructed Lieut.-Colonel R.E.
Courtney, C.O., 14th Battalion, to place himself in
communication with Band-Master Code and yourself with a

view of his taking over the band instruments and
holding same for use of one of the other Battalions
upon their arrival in Melbourne, which I expect to
happen at an early date.
Yours faithfully,
J.M.

While greatly appreciating Mr. Wilson's offer
I fear there is no opportunity for making use of his
services in the manner indicated.
