In reply to your M 3, and in confirmation of my wire
of the 16th inst., I can recommend the undermentioned as
Company Commanders in order of preference.
Major E. K. Baker, 78th Battln. Infantry, Adelaide
(a) Lieut. H.P.H.Brittain, 74th "       "                "
Capt. A.S.R.Gartrell, 28th Engineers              "
   "      F.B.Gladman, Sen. Cadets, Port August, (& late
A.G.A. Victoria)
(b) Lieut. L. D%Heming, 78th Battln. Infantry, Adelaide
(a) Has passed and been recommended for Captaincy in
74th Battln. Infantry - strongly recommended.
(b) Has passed for Captain except Field Engineering, would
make a good Commander.
The above are Citizen Force Officers, I can and do
strongly recommend before  them any of the Officers of the A. & l.
Staff serving under me, viz., Captains Hardie, Jess, Bushell,
McFarlane and Kinnish & Lt. Wieck.

I have your two letters of the 16th instant.
I propose to leave to the Battalion Commanders the selection
for recommendation of all officers of the Battalion.
One battalion, viz the 13th, will be raised in New South
Wales and the C.O. of same has not yet been selected. As
soon as it is known who will command the Battalion, I shall
refer your letters to him and your best course will be
to place yourself in communication with him.
