Ws some sereening by trees but in Sunben Rd there we none. word went back to Bro & to Bde of 1 sositer, & th 1 NofI river ws not occupied by Y. Sampson British. ReC.Oas (Col. McSkarry had b k. the morning before 1 fight in 1 wershes X near Corbie - out of his sut attending to a cod man at moment (ll got this man & he san out. next shell hit a tru close by abt 5ft above 1ground & K. MacSharry - he died an hr later at I dressing ster- The lwd shell also K. the man whom he ws leading away + badly wd 1 adjt. This ws in (straf laid down by (ferms &o attacking the Tommies near
Moslancourt). Maj Sampson Sent Lieut. Semon across to N. of river to get connection &1 Tomones. He took a Scout & crossed the road bridge & 4t L. Coy. Tther bridges - oursenges were abready at work setching them. There ws I kil of an Engr. on the bride & some blood. They sd to there had be a no of ferms suthing up a while Flag on 1 by cliff N. of 1 Somne. They went across to being them in prisoner - & this man as hit by a Missile cooing from further back. By him Tomanies had sort tome down & as Lemon sot across the Tommics
were collecting these prisoners. The tommies by this time sad have been. E of Chipitly. They Sho have Captd Chipilly before we got to Cerioy. The officers. sd to tey had just arrived there. They were engaged Collecting Jerms. there were more tommies there then prisoners. As Semon got back he Saw I tommies slowly soing forward. Tue ws nofering. But. presently he saw them going slowly back. Our men, sd to as I Tomanies got fored they saw the Germs o two gans wh, were in illag not then firing (the Other, had ba silenced by now). While Tommies cleared in (ot direction. The genns were not fired agin. Semon tot 1 British ofrs tt our men were being fe. By I time he got back the Bn on fet we getting forward This caused I ferms at Steep river bank w 1 M.guns to five up heart. They were all in their duponts. The migs were all on too o1 bank. to live belts in than & lots of cmpties bet them. The funs were mostly heavies - abt 200dd gens in all - & 6 mwfrs The also hed he fired & I shells Att D0 were beside them. eferms were taken in I dujouts encludy
a very bedly wd Bn C.O here were also some tank man who had bn captd from I destroyed tanks - they were released. A bty of our Hows. 110th How Bt. took up a postton Abt 9A5.5. firing over in directu of Mericourt. Re two ferman Jans Nof 1 river Saw it. They opened fired on our guns at once. The first shot k one of our arty offes & Severalmen, & these turned to Engage gernan gens but before they got a chance germans santhered the place to shells fering in shell co after shell. Shorth after a team
of horses came down I road galloping - hooked ap 1 gun - the ferms firing at the al time & paleed the gan out; to minates Cater ateam came down again I palled 1 other gen away. This ws at Istage when Lemon we going across I river to other side. After I fermans had cleared from those 2 guns there ws no trouble from there. But Abt I pm the ferius were seen to be fetting down by driblets into Chepelly word ws sent to (rear & heavy howizzers concentraty on Ivillage. It ws Ibest sight
the Bn had seen in Trance- shepill ws like a volcans of red clust. The Germans sot out running across the hill to I back being hurried up by our M.gs. That Evg after dusk, 15 Brws seld by t Bdi. & reserve nowed sound in Sapporta to 16 Bn along 1 terraces E of Dudgeon wood. They stayed there abb 3 days & then Came back N of 1 Somme to Saitly Laurette. While Bn i at the Terracis near Dudgeon wood the Term planes were very active M. gannin Eds & one man ws wd. The first 15 Bu had from 1 air of the 15 Bn got 2 suns in
W o Cerisy village behind Tsemetery. Mosto 1 cellars were remfd wconcrete + Carrisoned - & there as a by dressing ste in Wvillage The funs wh fired on 15 Bn were the Iguns mentioned When thest were put out they got no fire from the Nside o1 Eiver. While 15 Bn wa in Dudgeon Valley they were shown by a toming officer how 5o fire a p.2. Low. They turned kim round & ten all day tony they were firing A.2 Sedson 1Ferms. Ty started on Bray & Cenftened & shortened + were perfecty 5 heppy to themselven. The Lerman
shell to day put some 5 qcito valley. On Aug. 9 abt 32 A very fine barrage ws put Americans advanced over & perma in a NE direct from Inalard Wood. Very heavy my fire came from I directo of Chipilly but (yaukees mined this & worked up towds fressaire wood to cut off peninsula All along the top of Penissula ferman flares were still going up even after 1 Yankees had 1ot to Jesssaire Wrod. Aug 10 Nextmorning a Battalion of 13th Bde? ed be seen dug in along the E side of 1 clips. Keyts o 1 Chipilly Penensula.
A Shaw Wo K. late H Hockin wil. in 1after by a shell when things were pretty quiet (may have be a piece of one of ours frone Chipitz). Before Aug.8. to Jerms. made a day light raid on 15 Bn in 1 trenches taken over from French. This we beaten of. The account of the Bn ID. is with that of Bde 1.0. with the Dar Diary of Bde. In I doy a Ireueleman never entove. I top. They were very invisible. As soon as our people got in of course they cont be kept down. They were out getting crow roop from Cachy &son The ferm. cont help noting to difference

have been E of Chipilly.  They

shd have captd Chipilly before

we got to Cerisy.

The officers sd tt they

had just arrived there.  They were

engaged collecting Germs. &

there were more Tommies

there than prisoners.

As Semon got back he

saw / Tommies slowly going

forward.  There ws no firing.  But

presently he saw them going slowly

back.  Our men sd tt as

/ Tommies got forwd they saw the

Germs w / two guns wh were

not then firing (the other in / village had

bn silenced by now).  The men

saw / Germs clear in one direction

while / Tommies cleared in

were not fired again.

Semon told / British offrs

tt our men were being k..

By / time he got back the Bn

on / rt ws getting forward.

This caused / Germs at /

steep river bank w / m. guns

to give up heart.  They were

all in their dugouts.  The m.gs.

were all on top o / bank -

w live belts in them & lots of

empties beside them.  The guns

were mostly heavies - abt

20 odd guns in all - X 6 m/wfrs

The also had bn fired & / shells

were beside them.   Abt 50 Germs

were taken in / dugouts including

a very badly wd Bn C.O.

There were also some tank

men who had bn captd from

/ destroyed tanks - they

were released.

A bty of our Hows -

110th How Bty. took up a positn

abt 9 A 5.5 firing over in

/ directn of Mericourt.  The two

German guns N of / river saw

it.  They opened fire on our

guns at once.  The first shot

k one of our Arty offrs &

several men, & these turned

to engage / German guns -

but before they got a chance 

/ Germans smothered the

place w shells firing in shell

after shell.  Shortly after a team

of horses came down / road

galloping - hooked up /

gun - the Germs firing at

them all / time & pulled the

gun out; 10 minutes later

a team came down again &

pulled / other gun away -

This ws at / stage when Semon

ws going across / river to 

/ other side.

After / Germans had

cleared from those 2 guns

there ws no trouble from there.

But abt 3pm the Germs

were seen to be getting down

by driblets into Chipilly.

Word ws sent to / rear & /

heavy howitzers concentrated

on / village.  It ws / best sight

the Bn had seen in France -

Chipilly ws like a volcano of

red dust.  The Germans

got out running across the hill

to / back being hurried up

by our m.gs.

That evg after dusk, 15

Bn ws reld by 1st Bde. &

moved round in support reserve all

to 16 Bn along / terraces E of

Dudgeon Wood.  They stayed

there abt 3 days & then came

back N of / Somme to

Sailly Laurette.  While Bn ws

at the Terraces near Dudgeon

Wood the Germ planes were

very active m. gunning /

rds & one man ws wd.  The

first 15 Bn had from / air.

The 15 Bn got 2 guns in

front W of Cerisy Village behind

/ cemetery.  Most o / cellars

were reinfd w concrete &

garrisoned - & there ws a 

big dressing stn in / village.

The guns wh fired on 15

Bn were the 3 guns mentioned.

When these were put out they

got no fire from the N. side o /

river.

While 15 Bn ws in 

Dudgeon Valley they were

shown by a Tommy officer how

to fire a 4.2 how.  They

turned them round & then

all day long they were firing

4.2 shells on / Germs.  They

started on Bray & [[Cengthened?]]

& shortened & were perfectly

happy w themselves. The German

tt day put some 5.9 shell into /

valley.

On Aug 9 abt 3? A

very fine barrage ws put

over & / Germans Americans advanced

in a NE directn from Malard

Wood.  Very heavy m.g. fire

came from / directn of

Chipilly but / yankees missed

this & worked up towds Gressaire

Wood to cut off / peninsula.

All along the top of the / Peninsula

/ German flares were still going

up even after / Yankees had

got to Gressaire Wood.

Next morning Aug 10 a Battalion

of 13th Bde? cd be seen dug in

along the E side of the/ cliffs &

heights o / Chipilly Peninsula.

Lt Shaw ws k.

Lt Hocken wd. late in / aftn by

a shell when things were pretty

quiet (may have bn a piece of

one of ours from Chipilly).

Before Aug. 8. the Germs made a 

daylight raid on 15 Bn in /

trenches taken over from / French.

This ws beaten off.  The Account of the

Bn I.O. is with that of Bde I.O.

with the War Diary o / Bde.

In / day a Frenchman never

went over / top.  They were very

invisible.  As soon as our people

got in of course they cdnt be

kept down.  They were out getting

iron roofs from Cacly & so on.

The Germ cdnt help noting /
