Hear on boat Gen Bridges v. bad.
Col White tells me: [[shorthand]] would be very trying but last few days
since a particular shell exploded near him had been more [[predictable]]
Col Howse said to me he should be careful and next
day when a shell exploded near them White said
Gen I think it is no use giving them chances
to come into shelter and remain there
for a little.
This day going up the gully met Captain Glasgow
of the lighthorse. He said I have had 5 men hit
at a particular point. Be careful. That Gl. is
not sort of chap to romance but you hear so manythis news of that sort that you get a little tired
of it. However as we went up
700 yds from Monashes
they said: Run across here.
We did 1st 1 then 2 then 3 then 4

1915 60 30 Days September
About a minute between. we did so 3/4 times
till we got to Thompsons dressing station
We stopped there some time. He beckoned to me
and said come along White time for you to do your bolt.
I ran across. He was [[lightly]] a cigarette.
Thomp. said be careful of this next patch we have had
several men hit. Cres. Gen beckoned to me
then White I think we must be moving on.
He went on and the last I saw of him
was his long locks disappearing. I don't know how it
happened but all at once there seemed to be a commotion
and a [[shorthand]] I didn't hear anyone call out for stretcher bearers
but there must have been someone. Thompson dashed
out and we looked round to see who it was
and they were kneeling over the general. Casey said

is it the General. I said yes but you cannot do any good
by going out now.
They brought him into shelter and they say
that 12 heart beats more and his life would have been
lost. Thompson put on a
tourniquet. I don't know if we could have done anything.
They stopped the bleeding. The general came in looking
very white quite different from his usual
brown colour - he said tell them
not to carry me down I don't want any stretcher bearers
hit. Thompson said: Nonsense
for of course you have to be to carried down.
He tried to resist. We stopped all people coming
up the gully for about 100 yards and then
sent him down with 2 stretcher bearers. You know
I think these Turks have some decency Bean.
There was not a shot all the while these 2 stretcher bearers
were going down the gully.

On board ship the wound became
gangrenous. It was very high up and had
cut 2 arteries including the femoral,
& a vein. The only chance was an amputation and they said
they were certain he could not stand the shock.
He was very low, very feeble but today
(May 17) when we went off to see him he could
just understand.
