he had gone. But on

they found he had picked
up odd L.G magazines

final objve. He was
agn told to report to the
RAP but instead
he went back to where
some aeroplanes had
dropped some aero-ammn.
He ws going back for a
further box when he ws
shot thro / head -
only a bit of a kid (He
ws / youngster who found
/ Dalziel tin mine
outcrop in N.Q. &
knocked a bit off &
brought it back to /
Dad). He ws evacuated
very badly wd but no more
has yet bn heard.

29 May. McSharry, then ^2 L.H.R, adjutant toCannan (who ws O.C. Quinns Post & stayedthere whoever else ws there) ws sitting on theside of the C.T. near H Qrs when there wsthe devil of a thud - he slipped into / trench &as he did so saw the low red glare on acloud of smoke or dust & a lot of blackthings in it. Then it began to rain down& he ws buried up to / knees and a 13 Bn man &his batman who were w him helped him out. He wentstraight down to / bomb store & got some bombs- the 13Bn in the post were much shaken & werebeginning to come out of there & of the support [[* shorthand]opposite old HQ. McSh. called "Come on Australia" &that helped to steady them. Then he led over

Hehad seen the Turk bombs coming over at / veryfirst w their v. long fuses - sparking thro / air- they were dangerous down abt HQ not before -they had discussed this contingency amongst themselves& thought abt it. He settled at M. with his two men- had a lighted candle in a tin for / bombs &had handed his rifle to the 13 Bn man & ws goingto pitch bombs in when he saw coming down / [shorthand] right beside them a Turk - bold enough leading - &abt 12 very enthusiastic gentlemen peering afterhim. They ducked out of sight. McSharry ws justgoing to [[shorthand]] Quinnway McS keeps our men hidden

1st Bn got a bit too

up w m.gs. They called
up a tank - (the tank
offr ws walking abt). When
/ tank came up they
stopped fighting; & a abt 50
Germs were captd there -
some bolted when they saw / tank -
& 27 light m.gs.

At Quinns Pope wanted 2 offrs to go out &occupy the craters. He told a L.H. offrof this. The instant answer was: "Putme down for one & Colpitts for theother." (We were afraid if / Turksm This ws / occasion when theyCaptured a Turk who fought w them.It ws some name like Cade (T.A. Kidd)

Minenwerfer positions
were found all numbered,
& camouflaged & w shafts
dug down. There were wires
going down w toggles but
no minnies in - lots of 12. 3. 2
The C.O. came upon a number
of Germs shamming dead in
one of these pits. They threw
dirt at them & they got up
& surrendered.
