29 May. McSharry, then ^2 L.H.R, adjutant to
Cannan (who ws O.C. Quinns Post & stayed
there whoever else ws there) ws sitting on the
side of the C.T. near H Qrs when there ws
the devil of a thud - he slipped into / trench &
as he did so saw the low red glare on a
cloud of smoke or dust & a lot of black
things in it. Then it began to rain down
& he ws buried up to / knees and a 13 Bn man &
his batman who were w him helped him out. He went
straight down to / bomb store & got some bombs
- the 13Bn in the post were much shaken & were
beginning to come out of there & of the support [[* shorthand]
opposite old HQ. McSh. called "Come on Australia" &
that helped to steady them. Then he led over
