Brit counterattack abt 10.30a.m.
6Bde.
23/24 Bn (1 Sept.) made morning attack.
23 Bn was ordered to get into 14 which hadn't been
mopped up. (in 14 & 20. Near Halle
& Anvil Wood) Wood was full of Germans.
Left at 10am Sept Aug 31 Omiect. ordered
to move as soon
country near Peronne ws German

Confce at 9 pm. 31 Sept & decide to attack at

Decide in morning to attack at 1.30. Arty slowly
all morning. At 1 p.m. put down an intense barrage
with their gun. At 1.30
24, 23 & 21 Bn. went in w
objve E of wood. St Q. village ws
a reg. redoubt, Barbed wire,
Posts, over 100 m.gs.; trenches full
of dead. Hand to hand fighting
at 15 paces etc. Many dead Germans.
Response thickened. They ended up
just clear of wood from
Gott mit uns towds Allaine
in the 2 trenches running down hill. Germans in Allaines.
