The houses of Peronne
were abt 400 yds away.

- in this quarry many men were
lying wd -so many tt things looked
ugly & the German ws getting shells right
in - tho men came to Marray & asked leave to
get a stretcher & carry the wd out. When the 2nd
charge ws to be
made the faces of the diggers were very
quiet & determined.
"Its a flash bloody way of Committng
suicide", sd one digger -
over they went at 5pm
in one thin line & were
mown down. There ws
a trench along the South side of
rly E. of the cemetery - &
they attacked due S.
When 60 Bn came in it
ws not known where the
53rd was - the order ws
simply to go in and take
over wherever they found
the 53rd Bn was - posts
etc. 60 Bn came in &
sd we know you fellows

- you get out we'll look
