James Lionel Sandy observer Sezgt H F Hughes, acriasgunner, were L. Aud geris ed up on an artitery observation on 17t Dec. 19 were 17/17 when they were attacked by C Enumy planes. a. Clest Catest models DSA Scouts – thought to belong to Scouts the 29th Pursuil Fright. The fight we at 255 pun 29r 5 Sandy us observing, a shoot for one of Corpo heavies. newees He went four limes lowds Germ. Cine & eachtime gun fired each time the wireless below recd. G (fire). At 352 At 2.52 they got his last not on ( wereless The ground observer says tt be Cd havegot away but he went for them; & 1 major of the Ante aircrest group says it is 1 sontest fight he has seen on this pont. One E.A. dived at him & observer goe 1 machine es right tro1 petrol tank. The bullet emptied (setrol tank & grazed ( german pelots thigh He landed in our 21/5 Bn Flines near & Wegitert. His machine ws absolutely intact. He put his ans is o up at once pointed to his wouad cunpeterally
hear of 32 Meanwhile 26 Lieut EJ Jones o R.C. observer saw sandy in difficutties & Hedpon came to his assistance in Another R.E8. Between (two Ke8 of them they bead the EA off & the Termo. 2 retured to their own lines. Jomes flew round sandy to see what machive he had bn helping Sandy Jones He sot his number on (Cail- A3816. Sandys 70 machine ws then flying apparently all right under perfect ton thol exapt a oncs panpt. a Baren a trifh lost Hedious seem too sare of his derectin 57C 9 returned to the dcrodsome for more ammunnite when he went back on to te lite sws not to be found. IThe first word an got of S. whereatto us from R0 12 Stationary Hospilal. They reported to pelot + observer had both on found dead in a field 5o miles N. of St r0l. S and his observes, had bok i been found killed? The observes wo shot thro the left E

The machine had crasten 85 but Landy ws still strapsed in spout seat & oberver had 1 never tried to ship the joy stick so as to fly the mackine The wind as IX. Te macking probly flew roun in bis left hand circus- if she hadd flown straight shewd have finished up in the Sea. As she gradually closed, dlown she wd glide steeper. There ws a mark on 1 ground showing where she hil 5 first, bounced 6oyds, & them hit 1 tipo giving & Sonnground. Weether observernor gilst sndstain any further injuries in the crash. The maching had 2 12 his petrol & probly flew for 2ars bl 82 7N ag& The AA. officer Cookiny fom below actually reported that the other maching resumed duty! (18Sandy's maching)
32a RERRT OF O.C. End SAUTHERN A.A. GROUE. At 2.55 p.m. 17,12.17, six enemy fighters came over our lines in the vicinity of ARMENTIERES and attacked an REs which was on duty near there. Although hardly pressed by the E.A., the REd would not give up but hut up a hard fight against his six opponents. Finally one of the Hun machines was seen to be hit and to come down in the direction of FRELINGHEIN. Two other REs's came up and joined in the combat and the E.A. withdrew. One REs was seen to proceed homewards and the other two continued duty copy. Certified true Ant Dano Blake, lung &i bulled had come e 2 back. It us an armour piercing bullet thro his chest o entered ( Case of Landy 1X must have bu pided instanty. The mackin 8 but Landy us still shapped in sport sat rs never tid, to dist Re soy stich so as to py The wind as NE. Te machine prob 33.0 in bi left hand circus if she had straight shewd have finished up in t sheguadually closed, down she wd glide There ws a mark on (ground showing o first, bounced Coyds, & tinhit 1 tipo Svnaground. 2 Dec 47/1917. The German machine had a Mersides 160th P Fngine. She was Albatioc DSA. NoD /5390. Propeltor No 18989. Glammatdy Paruda Thews sent to St omer- & had been asked for on behalf of an Australion was mascums.

As soon as the Bo started fermans ran from their line of posts in sheWholes. There as no fighting up to Decoy wood for C Coy; A Coy struck a few solatis groups. 36
37 The left ws on Prly. It ws not in further touch wt Bod Dion wh ws behind (barage as Tero. On the 1st Objee the 3rd Din cd be seen 300 to 400 Eds to left tear, but they say they idnot move on acct of their left (NE) being held apat Belleview. Vienna Cottage t numbers of mss also got them, & many of 47Bn casuattees came from there. They went through Decoy Wood, & C. Bloy Hess were subin the wooden (overground) struchore there (made of thick logs). The wood was very boggy. 40 prisona encluding offi were wxan there - very little fight ws put up. An NCO-bomber of 47Bn went ahead to this place & put some bombo into it & it surrendened at once.

Ihad ws outside the 47Bn objve but Lieuttmith & Seryt Know St) Carter decided by themefloce to Joz & try to reduce this fire. They got up on to the top of hill but Assyria wt away in (air owing right to the left aot being ap when the bassage moved 484 on the cdnt move on account of the gt Bdenot Ilef Some upon being 12ly of 48Bn were lefton to foom a defensy line plank. They were baste enfilade here. to anyon not known A is

Sandy was a son of

the paint merchant in Sydney.

Sandy landed on /

Peninsula but ws wd

in / foot & ws discharged,
He rejoined, & got into /

.F.C. as a ground officer;
He had learnt to fly when

wounded in England wounded &
got leave to fly again.
It was Sergt Hughes
first trop over / line.

Sandy, when he passed
Jones after / flight, was
flying North — Sandy's last message was:–2.5 2. Fire.

The shoot had just started.

[*Sandy had fired 70 rds & the observer

xxx  170. Both guns were
loaded x There ws a drum ( with very few
shots fired) on the L.G. wh stopped as soon s his
finger relaxed.  There were 16 bullet holed in / machine
but nothing ws damaged by / fight.
The same lot of EAs came out next day
& had a scrap with
another Australian
pilot. They withdrew.*]

1st Anzac.

Lieut. James Lionel Sandy
observer Sergt H F Hughes, aerial gunner, were
up on an artillery observation on 17th Dec. 1917.

when they were attacked by 6 enemy planes.
latest models D 5A scouts — though to belong to
the 29th Pursuit Flight.  The fight ws at 2.55 pm.
Sandy ws observing a shoot for one o / Corps heavies.
HE went four times towds Germ. line & each time / guns fired
–  each time the wireless below recd. "G" – (fire). At 2.52
they got his last noted on / wireless. The ground observer says tt he
cd have got away but he went for them; & / major of the Anti
aircraft group says it is / stoutest fight he has seen on this front.
One E. A. dived at him & / observer got / machine
right thro / [petrol tank.  The bullet emptied
/ petrol tank & grazed / german pilots thigh.
He landed in our 21st Bn lines near Ploegsteert. His
machine ws absolutely intact. He put his hands
up at once, & pointed to his wound energetically.

Meanwhile Lieut E J Jones  & K C
Hodgson observer saw Sandy in difficulties &
came to his assistance in another RE8. Between / two

of them they [[? head]] the EA off & the Germs.
retired to their own lines.  Jones flew round
Sandy to see what machine he had bn helping.
He got his number Jones on / tail – A3816. Sandy's
machine ws then flying apparently all right under
perfect control – except tt Jones thought. tt S. appeared
a trifle lost, He didnt seem too sure of his directn.
J. returned to the aerodrome for more ammunition.
When he went back on to the line S ws
not to be found.  The first word we got of S.s
whereabts ws from No 12 Stationary Hospital.
They reported tt / pilot  & observer had both bn
found dead in a field 5 miles N. of St Pol. S and
his observer had both been found killed
The observer ws shot thro the left

but Sandy ws still strapped in / front seat & / observer had
never tried to shift the joy stick so as to fly the machine.

in big left hand circles —if she had flown 
straight she wd have finished  up in the sea.  As
she gradually closed down she wd glide steeper.
There ws a mark on / ground showing where she hit
first, bounced 60 yds, & then hit  / tip o / wing &
swung round.  Neither Observer nor pilot sustained
any further injuries on the crash.
The machine had 2
hrs petrol & probly flew
for 2 hrs.
The A.A. officer looking from below actually
reported that " the other machine resumed 
duty." ( i.e. Sandy's machine).

REPORT   OF   O.C.   2nd   SOUTHERN   A. A.  GROUP
At 2.55 p.m. 17.12.17,  six enemy fighters came over our lines
in the vicinity of ARMENTIERES and attacked an RE8 which was on

Dec 17/1917.  The German machine  had
a Mercedes 160 HP Engine. She was

{ Albatross - D 5 A No D / 5390.
{Propellor No 16969. 9 laminatns by Garuda.
She ws sent to St Omer - & had been
asked for on behalf of the
Australian war Museums.

All the time / line ws under
m.g. fire from Assyria & Vienna.
When they reached their line
beyond xx Decoy Wood they
were under a m.g. fire from
Assyria.  It had bn ws outside
the 47Bn objve but Lieut JE Smith
& Sergt (now Lt) Carter decided
to go ^by themselves & try to reduce this
fire. They got up on to the
top o / hill but Assyria ws
right away in / air owing
to the left not being up.
When the barrage moved
on the 48th cdnt move on
account of the 9th Bde not
being upon / left – Some
of 48 Bn were left on / rly
line to form a defensive
flank.  They were badly
enfiladed here.
It is not know tt anyone

taken abt 90 prisoners & all
ws going well
