Lt Bond was hit by
a fragment of shell in /
back abt dusk on Oct 5.
This ws only a xxxx a small fragment
wh went right through.
2 S.bs were left w him
& he ws brought out &
went to hospital &
died in hospital in E 

some 7 x days or fortnight
later.


Lt Duncan ws seriously
wd during the advance
thro the left chest.


Lt Yule hit in back & arm
during / advance – He
went right up to the objve.

Col. Clark ws hit in
Potsdam dugout – A 
shell came thro the window
aperture & hit the telephone,
part of wh entered Capt.
Hillary. Col. Clark ws
hit under / left eye abt
10 a.m.
Capt Hillary ws hit at same
time in head & arm.
Lt Pitman ws killed on
Oct 5 in his forward

 station at Thames. He
ws asleep, having given
up his berth to let some
of his men sleep while
he camped outside beside
the wall.

The Bn went to Asylum at
Ypres where hot food ws waiting.

On Oct 9 came to  [[?Frezeuly]]
On 10 relieved Lancs Fusiliers
in front line. They were at
17B 20.25, 17B o.5½,
abt 17A 60.65, 17A.00.90

At daylight next day (11 Oct)
the Germn. were sniping actively.
It ws not till 3 p.m. that
the 44 Bn got him down. 
A few o /  best shots started
sniping & picked off some
Germs. Then the practice spread.
By 3 p.m. you cd almost do
as you liked – we completely
got the sniping down.
        

 A number of the Lancs.
wounded were still there when
44 Bn went in / second time.
At Leve H. on 12 Oct there were
abt 70 of them still.

good batches of reinfts
for some months.

12 Oct. Day 3.30, 44 Bn
got word tt / leading Bn of
9 Bde were in their
Assembly positn. That ws /
signal to move out. [They
assembled just in rear after
Cemetery].
     44 Bn moved to Hill 40 where
the men made shelters for
themselves & got rations & rum & 
were organd. into 2 Coys of
5 plns  A & C Coys. xxxx 
(8 plns) in all B & D (2 plus).
On night of 13/14   44 Bn went
up agn to relieve 9 Bde
on arriving at front line they
found it 200 yds further
back than where they
left it – It came back 
close in front o / Cemetery.
There seemed to be no Germs for

hundreds of yds ahead.
This ws reported. On evg.
of 14 15/16 posts had to be
got out to 17 A 3.4, 17 A.30.65
Hillside Fm at A.2.8, A.05.95
HQ 11C 90.10, 11C.70 20
(just S. of Heine). After /
posts were put out the
9 Bde relieved the 11th
& the 11 Bde 44 Bn moved
out to Hill 40. (After posting
the rt Post Lt Fraser of 33
Bn ws sniped dead, possibly
by Germs. doing / same thing).

 

On night of 10/11 Lt Young A ws k, on
Rly (on wh they were going in) just
before reaching Daring Xing.
Lt Drummond A  (both above had bn

lent by other Coys to A. Coy.) sniped 
& K. on morning of Oct 11 during
enemy activity by dugout at
17A 00.50. He ws one of 1st to be

sniped –
Lt Mackenzie A (now in A) ws sent
back sick on coming to Hill 40 2nd time
Lt Maddiford  — allright.
B Coy. Capt Skinner  allright
Lt Darling  – 2cc slightly hit but
remained on duty till came out &
 then sent to hosp. & had a bit taken from arm
Lt O Carroll – on coming out to Hill 40

first time ws badly shellshocked &
has been in bed ever since.

was one regularly bursting
on the rly. They saw it &
decided to chance it at a
run but it burst just as
they reached / spot. Lt
Darling who ws one of the
three picked himself up &
found OCarroll MM on his
knees in (A S.B in 3rd Field Amb in Gallipoli & Pozieres) / shell hole o /
shell wh had burst.
Then he heard a call &
found Hamilton Fisher
deep in / mud & wounded
Fisher ws an elderly
man much o / same
type as Hamilton Fisher.
Darling is a brother of Maj. D.
of 28 Bn & one of same family
as Joe D. of S. Aust.
        On 19th at Hill 40 the 44 Bn ws
heavily strafed with Mustard oil - 8 casualties
