They were pretty well up
by 5 pm.
Our L.Gs were heavily
strafed in front. line
Boyd had orders that as
soon as Scotties were seen
attacking he ws to
move across & link up
w them. Abt 5 p.m.
the Scotties were seen well

near the forming up positn

The Bn came

carrying from
Glencorse. Some
few were up in / front line
with 59, a few straggling.
The shelling ws / heaviest
the 58 Bn had ever bn in.
The Bde ws simply working
in parties under offrs -

- the Bns were entirely mixed
& working in mixed parties.
The old green line ws
Black Watch Corner -
The Divn on our rt

oppositn & we took
much country ahead wh
we simply had to leave.

25th. After getting ^ by walking & begging lorry
rides to Steenvoorde & back
with Gilmore, I heard, after
dinner, that there had bn
terribly hard fighting thro'
the day on our right. Abt
dawn this morning the left
of 33rd Divn (on our right)
ws attacked & bent back
& finally lost a post N. of
Menin Rd. We had our
first hint of later trouble from
the photographers whom we
met at 7 p.m. grey with
dust in their Ford car
returning. They sd it had
been an awful day, barrages
on & behind Glencorse Wood -
all work on roads given up,
dumps blowing up - far the
heaviest day. On coming
45
37
up to the Operations Roomin we heard that at
8.10 the 5th Div. reported its
rt Bde & 98th Bde on itsflan ws being v. heavily
attacked. 98 Bde had bn
driven back 800 yds &
that the O.C. rt coy had sd
he ws going to withdraw
& had bn ordered to hold.
Col Marshall had bn put
in commd locally & the
60 59 Bn ws to reinforce.
Birdwood spoke to Hobbs
at 8.10 & told him tt /
big attack must be carried
out. Forming up wd be
hard, but the two bns on the
rt flank were to be echeloned
back.
Fresh troops must be
used for the Blue Line (2nd objve).
45
38
Gen. Hobbs sd tt he quite
agreed but had spoken with
Elliott who sd it wd ^ be impossible.
to form up.
Hobbs had told Elliot tt /
job must be done.
Gen. Birdwood confirmed this,
tt / job must be carried
out. Two Bns of 8th Bde
were to be sent up for the
2nd objve, & 59 Bn used for
the 1st objve only. Any gap
wh remained / next day
after / attack had gone thro'
must be dealt with by
an attack by reserves
from the flank.
A most intensely
anxious moment.
Thank heaven it isn't the 4th
