There he recd. a message
by runner from Thomas
at Fuze Cot: that he
ws being attce surrounded
on flanks & rear by
abt 60 Germans - He

etc. for garrison work
- & daylight ws at
3.15 am & no sign of
relief. If he had better
withdraw wd they 
f He asked "Shall
I hold on or withdraw?

Fletcher under
circs. decided the
only thing was to
withdraw & gave the
signal.
