Some Gallipoli details.
from Col Jackson GSO 1 3rd Aust Div.
Aug. 7 1915 This morning
Jackson had to take the
7 Glosters & the SWelsh Pioneers
up Chailak Dere. They
were stopped by heavy rifle
fire. That night they were
put in with the N.Zealanders.
The 7 Glosters did magnificently; later
they came out without an offr &
with only junior NCOs. The
S. Welsh Pioneers were disappointing
 - some got in but
without their tools.
 X This a/c is
certainly right.
Jackson is a far
better man to
trust than Antill.

Col. Jackson, then GS.O. 111 13th Divn,
tells me tt he had to lead Baldwin & the COs
of his Bde up the Chailak Dere on Aug
8/9 early in order to show them / way
they wd have to go tt night. There ws
no possibility of mistaking / way.
Later / next morning at 3 am.
Jackson ws to have gone up to / head
o this valley. He cd not get there
till 5 am. so congested ws it w
mules, men etc of N.Z. Force.
Baldwin (he says) certainly chose / other
way because he found this way blocked.
Evacuatn. X
On last night at Gallipoli, J sd,
he found his way last parties of 600 (AB &
[*Really (Gh&Cz)*] C pties) were all ready to go off before/ other divns
arrived. He wanted the men to be put
into one of the 3 waiting barges & taken off
but Antill wdn't hear of it on any acct.
J. went & got Smythe's assent, & Patons &
went back to Antill - but A. flew off the
handle: & these men had to be kept there waiting
for the B & C. pties from the right before they cd be
cleared.
