They had to were seen getting into positn -
Germans were throwing flares almost onto our
front line continuously. It ws raining. It
ws therefore impossible to get out at 12.15
in front as arranged. At 12.5 he sent up his
3 or 4 corkscrew rockets, & opened a barrage on
Nomansland. It ws not a heavy barrage.
On left of D Coy one platoon managed to get
out well sheltered - But from there to right
troops cd not get out. They lay across top of trench
with heads dug into one side & heels into other
so allowing B Coy to get into trench beneath their
bodies

There ws a 2 mins barrage to cover 200
yds of mud. It ws xxxxx (inst. of 40 yds) It
ws raining, & men had been in 11 days without hot
meals except tea.
The barrage was behind the trenches
at the time when the troops had half
covered the ground. The Germans got m.gs.
onto them from well to rear & from right, (triangle)

& bombs from Bayonet trench. Some of
the men undoubtedly got in on left
about at X.
Lt. Steele & Lt MacIntyre were both killed
in this. Then all came back & found B
Coy in J.O. trench – C.O. ^O.C. not having supported
out in front where attack wavered.
The line ws reorganised & another
attempt made without arty. It failed (at
abt 1.30). From then it ws a case of getting
in wd. Casualties were abt 150 – 9 offrs
