Sunday. 4.18 3rd B. in boats landed
from ships. Boats landed
stranded when bullets began to
whiz. Men were out of the ∼
at once - sparks on beach
from Rifles in small hill on S.
end of beach.
There was machine gun
in hill on N end of beach &
also in a gully to S.E of Fishermans
hut.
Destroyers knew they had chosen the
wrong place, but too late to change.
Col. Maclagan became sure
of the mistake when he had reached
the top of the camp ridge.
The first boats ashore were on the extreme
left - nearly as far up as xxxxxxx
Fisherman's Hut. They are still
There (Thurs. 28). many men were
killed in them (10th & 11th) by rifle
fire & maxim from up gully in
front. 9 wound The boats seemed to

were seen to move. It turned out they were wounded
but afrd to move. Two stretcher bearers ^ 2nd Bn. were sent along
but ^ one was killed & other mortally wounded. They
finally got them on Monday night.
The men went straight up the hillside.
Col. Maclagan had trained the platoon
& Section leaders & so they cd do nothingthere were well qualified. Theygot over The 11th 10th & 9th went in
in that order from N to S. The 11th worked
left spur W4 & got to top of bastion B 2
where they were blocked. Some got to
Fishermans Hut, where there were Turks in xx
& took it. The
The 10th went up (part of it)though along the spur at xxx abt G3 &
up the precipice through the break in the
ridge, B 7. & nearly to D 2;
Col. Maclagan who came ashore
from destroyers at 4.28 saw that he was
wanted through south & cut through same
gap up to positn where brigade H.Q.

They went on to a positin to right rear
of McLagan where there were
3 emplacements. He cd see the
emplacements. Fired on Turks there
Took guns & spiked them.
Mc L. saw the positn was too
long & he made this party on

right retire. We had I hour
fortunately to dig in. One advance
party was kept up to help another
to dig in.
By 7. when 2nd brigade ws landing
this had bn done. ∧ 1st Engrs were
making rd.
Second brigade had to come in on
right after consultation betw brigadiers.
They went on, & by 11 they were
over on slope overlooking enemy's
positn. Some got onto further
ridge still - (units gun emplaced
- Turk came running thro
with moon gleaming on his
bayonet).
Late that night the
2nd Brig had to retire
to present positin
They left many of their
officers & men there & those

Sat. Q.E was bombarding Maidos.
Sund. May 2. Artillery all night
Mond. May 3 Heard Major M'N & Col. Bayoneted
Q.E. present on horizon but didn't fire.
Sea plane up going backwards and forwards 8 times

Wed. morning as mist-came in Goeben 5
came over just in front of her.
On Wed afternoon the naval aeroplane about 4 o'clock
reported they saw Turks apptly getting a Howitzer
into position appa on beach to North of us.
Maj. & P of W went over, Maj. alighting inside
the point. The two pasted the place with big
shell & an' observatin station after
ws found wrecked. There were 15 dead Turks.
The next morning a party landed from 2 destroyers
& found lots of wire & this observn
station & finally smashed it up.
Said that Queen Eliz. got onto 100 Turks forming up
to attack [[Shorthand]]. One explosion of
Shrapnel & no more Turks exist.
The aeroplane itself was winged
thro a float & a motor boat
hurriedly brought it in.
First Naval people arrived today &
French reinforcing 29th. We cd clearly see them
Thurs. v. quiet except fora Turkish guns seemed mostly
to have retired. Usual morning bombardment.

withdrawn from trenches & naval

was wet. Thurs night v. cold.
2 men went out after snipers on
Wed night. Struck a Turkish camp
& took overcoats of dead Turks.
Next day they went down to
tent of Turkish officer & took his bread.
Beach getting much clearer.
Large [Sketch] flags over ambulances.
I doubt if this is justified. Australn
amb. has not got them
(Wounded going, xxx ships
had a bad time under [[Shorthand]]
shrapnel. They were in 2
barges lying face upwards when xxxx
shrapnel got onto them. 3rd brigade
at last out of trenches (what I saw on the hill)
Friday Morning.
The Goeben was shelled
by all battleships in port this
morning for abt 10 minutes.
One gun from her

replied 2ce this afternoon, so I guess she's
still there. Reported and then
submarine thro' the Dardanelles.
Turks made a gallant attack
this afternoon agst left Bn (Chatham)
of Naval Brigade. They
came on jumping over bushesOur British machine guns got onto
them .& drove them back
Brit lost about 100 killed.
Our 3 brigades of 1st Divn
are now apptly all out
of the line reforming.
Friday night. Hot firing abt 8-9. p.m.
Turks charged with Bayonet
& drove Naval Brigade out
of the trenches Maclagans
3rd Brigade had made & held.
Went up but missed way & got
rather to left of this amongst R.N.
brigade who were being reinf. by 16th

The trenches were v. bad & there had been
casualties, one Marine officer wounded, etc.
Some very tired men of the 3rd were in trench
still unrelieved. R.M. seemed to me very jumpy
one man put rifle over trench & fired w his head below it "That's a good idea"
he sd. There was congestin in the trench owing
to men being relieved. The Turk fire
was very xxxxxxx hot, top of trench parapet
being constantly blown in ones face. Some
shots were almost deafening.
One blessed marine came crawling along / trench
He sd "the top had fallen in on him. There ws
no trench there any more & he
wanted to go and shake himself". Australn
Officer sent him back.
Trench needed deepening & our fellows
were passing in tools, but
there was an argument as to the
way in wh it shd be done wh
ws not finished when I left. One of
our Officers was wearing some leaves
in his cap - (a Turkish sniper the other
day was practically covered with
bits of bushes.
Sat. May 1. The Goeben opened
