On Wed afternoon the naval aeroplane about 4 o'clock
reported they saw Turks apptly getting a Howitzer
into position appa on beach to North of us.
Maj. & P of W went over, Maj. alighting inside
the point. The two pasted the place with big
shell & an' observatin station after
ws found wrecked. There were 15 dead Turks.
The next morning a party landed from 2 destroyers
& found lots of wire & this observn
station & finally smashed it up.

The trenches were v. bad & there had been
casualties, one Marine officer wounded, etc.
Some very tired men of the 3rd were in trench
still unrelieved. R.M. seemed to me very jumpy
one man put rifle over trench & fired w his head below it "That's a good idea"
he sd. There was congestin in the trench owing
to men being relieved. The Turk fire
was very xxxxxxx hot, top of trench parapet
being constantly blown in ones face. Some
shots were almost deafening.
One blessed marine came crawling along / trench
He sd "the top had fallen in on him. There ws
no trench there any more & he
wanted to go and shake himself". Australn
Officer sent him back.
Trench needed deepening & our fellows
were passing in tools, but
there was an argument as to the
way in wh it shd be done wh
ws not finished when I left. One of
our Officers was wearing some leaves
in his cap - (a Turkish sniper the other
day was practically covered with
bits of bushes.
Sat. May 1. The Goeben opened
