At 4.45 on 23/8/18 Bde took part in creeping barrage.

in support of 1st Inf Bde. Fire ceased 6.15 a.m. & one

section of 55 Bty under Lt ^ C.B. Thorne moved forward at 6.23
[*( two 18 pdrs)*]

coming into action at R 13c 67 35 at 6.55am. Thorne

then proceeded to 4 Bn Advanced HQ but as Bn Cdr had not

te then arrived commun was estab with bty, which had by this time

moved into action at R 15c 80 45 picking up the

mobile section en route. Thorne then went forward and

located our front line. Many targets engaged at the request

of the Bn Cdr, all fire being observed by Thorne.

As soon as 55 Bty was in action, 114 Bty was ordered to move forward

and came into action at R 14a 90 10. The roads leading

to their new posns. were heavily shelled but the drivers

on ammun. waggons. showed great determination and ammun

supply was maintained throughout day.

At 2 pm all btys participated in creeping barrage

supporting further advance on left flank, on completn of which 153 Bty

advanced and finally came into action at R 14a 80 10.  As soon as

reports recd that 53 Bty was in action, 54 Bty moved fwd to

14 FA Bde report

The average amount of ammun expended for day

per bty 2000 rounds.

Lt Thorne ^ (with 4 Bn?) says that, when he went to ^ advanced 4 Bn HQ at R 16d 38.

& found that Bn cdr had not arrived, he left his signallers at this

location and himself went fwd & found out situation of 4 Bn

These dispositions were sent to Bty and were aftwds verified

by Bn cdr.

Hostile arty was very active. A section of 77's were

firing from R 5b 55. This target was immed engaged

and silenced. Other btys were firing from the direction of

M1 b 55 and M8 b 25 90.

By this time the right and left coys of the 4 Bn had reached

the exploitation line and were being troubled by

m/guns. and snipers from Lapin Wood. All were

engaged and silenced.

During the operns the enemy made good use of his MGs and arty

from our left flank. Difficulty seemed to have been experienced in

gaining ground running from K 17b 92 and R 17d 92.

Hostile MGs apparently took up posns on top of this ridge

and while tanks were advancing they were fired on by light

arty from the direction of R 5b.

Throughout morning enemy paid a lot of attention to

Robert Wood & valley running through R 16d 3 8.

High ground in R 16 a 55 was carefully watched

by the enemy and small parties moving abt in this vicinity

were continually shelled.
