Gs estd posts in F & main pty came downtoo close to jn of G. 2 guns in G
were still in actn, shortening range.
Gs crept under their range - 2 flw p
still in action, & doing damage. At this
pt McN. ws on his own to hold xx
there while guns cd get out. Here Capt
Newlands presently joined him & helped
him to hold guns up there. Just before
this M'N blew up first flwp w
a mills grenade -
W Newland's asstce 2 S/Ms were
withdrawn to take tempy positn on
Central rd temply. Before 2nd gun got
out Newlands ws wd & McN ws
left on his own. M'N ws in a shell
hole - gun got thro' & Gs passed, leaving
M'N on his own. Gs got past almost
to rd. McN got across thro' wire to Central
Rd. M'N then orgd a pty to help tps in OG2

fs orgd pty wh ws led by N.C.O up OG1 while he
M'N came along parapet throwing bombs -
& picked up a L.M.g & fired at Gs. South
of jn of G.(37) M.N walked along parapet
firing w L.G. till it ws smashed.
They cleared OG 1 & F to near top; also
in O.G.1 ½ way from old bomb stop to
the Sunken rd, & consold. there.
Put in a block abt ½ way to S. rd.
They hung on there tho' a shell k.o. whole
of bombg post in O.G. 1.
The 10th reld (Capt Cornish) abt 3 p.m.
