It was through this accident to his raider
that Count Von Luckner decided to sail away
with his chief officer and 4 men to Levuka, to
see if he could capture a copra vessel which
generally was loading there for American and
European ports. Failing this, their intention
was to proceed to Suva, sink one of the big
mail boats in the passage, so as to stop all
shipping entering or leaving Suva, and then
wait for a suitable boat and capture it. Anyway,
we are glad to say their plans were duly
frustrated.
AN EPIC VOYAGE
Von Luckner covered between 4000 and
5000 miles from where the “Sea Adler” was
wrecked to where he and his men were captured
at Wakaya.
After a stay of a month in Suva, they were
sent to Auckland, New Zealand, to be interned.
From the camp there they made two
spectacular getaways and were not captured
until three or four days afterwards, after being
chased to the Kermadec Islands by
H.M.C.S. “Iris” (now “Recorder"). They
were eventually repatriated to Germany.

[Mr. Woodhouse, popular member of the

and enlisted for active service with the A.I.F.
He was an original “Anzac,” being a member
of the 2nd Battalion at the famous “Landing".
After a short stay on the Peninsula he
was invalided home with a shattered left leg.
He then returned, by invitation, to Fiji, where
he took part in the exploits of which he has
written.
In Count Von Luckner’s book, “The Sea
Devil,” Lieutenant Woodhouse (spelled
“Wodehouse” by Luckner) is mentioned and
the Count pays him a very great tribute.—

WAR-TIME WRECK.
——————
Salvage Attempt off
N.S.W. Coast.
STEAMER CUMBERLAND.
An attempt to descend 47 fathoms to the
war-time wreck of the steamer Cumberland,
which is lying two miles off Gabo Island, will
be made at the end of next week in a new
diving suit designed by a Sydney accountant.
Mr. E. R. Clifford.
A company, known as Cumberland Salvage,
Limited, which was registered in Sydney yesterday,
will conduct a survey of the wreck.
The Cumberland was chartered in 1917 by
the British Munitions Department to carry
a cargo of iron, copper, and zinc to England.
She struck a mine off the south coast of
New South Wales which blew a hole in her
bows. This was patched after beaching, and
an attempt was begun to tow the Cumberland
to Sydney The towing line parted in a
southerly gale, the patch was torn off, and
the Cumberland foundered. Her position has
been established since.
Mr. H. Whatmore, a director of the salvage
company, said yesterday that the cargo
on present-day values should be worth about
£40,000. A diver would leave Sydney tomorrow
week for the scene of the wreck.
The diving suit he would wear could, he said,
be used at much greater depths than the
old type of suit. During tests at Thursday
Island, divers descended to 62 fathoms in it,
remaining below 20 minutes.
