October 1917, Captain McVILLY took part in the 4th/5th operation
and Captain LATCHFORD in the 11th/12th operation. Captain

on 27th February 1917. He is at present an Instructor at the

Both Officers have strong personalities,
and are very capable leaders of men who have distinguished
themselves in action and both are young and athletic.

Captain S.G. Savige, D.S.O., M.C.,

Dear Savige,
The Mesopotamian units are producing a history,
and the Anzac Book Trustees stipulated that it should include
a short account of the Australian members of the Dunsterforce.
We are also anxious that it should contain a nominal roll
stating, if possible, where each officer and N.C.O. served.
Would it be too much to ask if you could put
together, quite shortly, an account - say, of 2,000 or 3,000
words - of what the Australian part of the Dunsterforce
accomplished?
I will try to get the nominal roll and, if
necessary, write to each member to discover where he served.
I realize that you are probably very busy, but
you know so much more about the subject than anyone else that
I am hoping you may see your way to assist in making this
record. I know that the Anzac Book Trustees and the Mesopotamian
Unit History Committee would be deeply grateful if you
would do so.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Bazley,
Enclosed herewith please find the three
small Nominal Rolls, in duplicate, as requested.
DISPENSERS - On 16th May 1917 Major Cossar (Pharmaceutical
S.O.to the D.G.M.S.) suggested making available 50 qualified
pharmacists to the Imperial Government. On the 22nd June
the offer was accepted and arrangements were made to
despatch them to India. From various causes six appear
to have gone astray, three I can trace as missing the ship
at Freemantle and two of the others as serving on
transports. In General Fetherston's Report of 1918 he
states that 45 went to India but after a careful search I
am able to trace only 44.
HEADQUARTERS STAFF - The names included in this roll
have been submitted to Captain Wickham who cannot add
to them and considers it complete.

FIRST HALF-FLIGHT A.F.C. - This roll has been compiled
from the embarkation roll and the particulars verified
with the files. No Daily Orders are held to enable me
to check its accuracy. I am attaching a P.of W.
Statement by Captain T.W.White, which, if you have not
already seen it, will be of interest.
Finally,I should mention that all the dispensers
who went to India were given acting W.O.Class II rank
without pay, to enable them to receive extra previleges
This favour was granted consequent on numerous complaints
by the men , copies of many of which are available, having
been made in writing.
Tomorrow I hope to make a start with the list of
addresses of the nurses.
Yours sincerely,
A J Withers

Dear Capt Bean,
Reference your letter of 10th [[?]]
Herewith all the matter which I can remember or
can source from other sources. You make
take this as correct, though I may have
omitted some incidents and some
of the names of personnel who deserved
mentioned. I regret I am unable to
help you more, but I feel sure you
will understand my position.
Much best wishes
Yours faithfully
Fred H Wickham
