SECRET AND VERY URGENT.

THIRD AUSTRALIAN DIVISION.

Divisional Headquarters,

4th. January, 1918.

Brig.-General C. Rosenthal, C.B., C.M.G.

Commanding 9th. Aust. Inf. Bde.

Brig.-General W. R. McNicoll, C.M.G., D.S.O.

Commanding 10th. Aust. Inf. Bde.

Brig.-General J. H. Cannan, C.B.

Commanding 11th Aust. Inf. Bde.

I have been asked by the Corps Commander to nominate

four officers from this Division who are prepared to take part

in what may possibly be a hazardous enterprise requiring initiative,

resource, and courage, and power of dealing with and managing men.

It is essential that only really good men, constitutionally strong,

as well as of determined character should be selected; the officers

selected should be prepared to volunteer. -

As the matter is entirely secret, no information can

be given as to the nature of the employment beyond that they will

be associated with officers from other Corps. -

The officers selected will receive the pay of their

rank plus £1/-/- per day, and be seconded from their units.   -

(1).

(2).     4/1/1918.

Lieutenants will probably be given the temporary rank of Captain.

Officers of the rank of Major, Captain or Lieutenant are eligible

but those of the rank and experience of Captain are most desired.

I wish you, as soon as possible, to submit nominations

of two officers from your Brigade complying with the above

conditions. - From the six nominations received, I shall select

four for submission to the Corps Commander. -

As soon as possible after receipt of this, please wire

me to say whether you will be able to submit two names; then follow

this up by telegraphing to me the names of the two men you recommend

and follow this latter action by full and minute particulars

describing the qualifications of the two officers you have chosen. -

Please impress upon any officers, interviewed  for this

purpose, that the matter is very secret, and also, yourself, treat

it as very urgent.   -

John Monash

Major-General

Commanding Third Australia Division
