The March to Freedom
The country towns 'villages' NSW of Armidale to Newcastle
are being stirred today as they have not been stirred since the early days of the
war. Even the now historic route marches of the Cooees ^the Kangaroos, the
men from Snowy River were not so inspiring or productive of more
patriotic fervour than the March to Freedom. It was commenced from Armidale
last Saty week (4May)....the march will occupy nearly 2 months
and at every centre visited military displays are being given, either in the open
or under canvas, whilst evy night mily tattoos or campfire
concerts are held. Capt Eade is in charge of the column in which are
included an arty subsection with an 18 pdr gun, [ea[?]] detail with a
2
searchlight; an infy [[?]] unit consisting of 2 officers
and 150 rank - file; a supply column with a travelling kitchen
& an ambulance waggon with [[AAMC?]] details and the AIF band
All along the route buildings are decorated and
crowds of people turn out to cheer the
ever increasing line on its way x

What stood out most of all in the march so far has been the spirit of the women
working for the comfort all the men.
March to Freedom
Each town no mttr how small has its Red X or Girls
Patriotic League and their eagerness to prove that the women of the country are
standg behind the men in their determination to fight has been illustrated
in a hundred ways . They came out in full force at Bendemeer
& marched alongside the soldiers who where hot and tired after a 15
mile march. The girls not content with marching , shouldered
the men's rifles and handed them cigs & lollies.
The crossing of the Moonbi Ranges, a spur of the Great Dividing Range
was not forgotten by the men in charge of the transport. As the the waggons had to be
pulled and pushed yard by yd up the steep roads.
