DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE,
MELBOURNE, 24th November 1932
Dear Bazley,
Returned herewith, is letter written by
ex Private G.C. BARNES as requested in yours of the
22nd inst. I recently completed a card for this
man showing that he was evacuated gassed on the 21st
November 1917: his subsequent hospital diagnosis
was Bronchitis.
I am unable to answer the questions
outlined by Barnes but after a casual glance at
the statistics of gassed in the F.A.B's I found
that they did have what seems to be a rather large
number evacuated through this cause proportionate
to other units, so am sending the figures for your
information. It is not possible to give figures
amongst the gunners only nor have I figures of
strength at hand that would enable me to give the
percentage.
The following are shown as evacuated
gassed during the period July to November. The figures
in brackets are those of Died of Gas Poisoning.
