They crossed a broken down trench
wire in front & then into shell holes whseemed they found to be a sunken
road. It ws a low part of /
bank & / Germs were not there
but were 20yds on either side.
After crossing this they ran
into Germs in a sap leading
down. They swerved to right.&
then up a bank. And presently

found a waterbottle - German -
in a shell hole.. This almost
saved their lives - diluted coffee.
They cd smell but not see
dead. They went from shell hole
to shell hole ^ in dark intervals. Then some one
fired. This missed. Parsons
got up again. There ws a flash
of a rifle & Parsons ws hit.
He went along ^ presently about 10 yds

Parsons sd “Bacon for Breakfast or
death”. They decided to go another
30 yds & direct lie up for
day. Abt 10yds out from tt shell
hole - they got the word "Halt”
- they cd tell by / accent tt it was
Brit. or Australian. “Parsons sd: What
are you - Australians”. Someone
sd yes. Parsons sd come on

ran in without hands up or anything.
They had French cloth caps.
In the dugout they got
their bacon, & margarine, &
marmalade & a tot of rum.
I would like to thank the officers and men for the kind treatment
we have had.
Sprattley, Sampson, Hyde &
anor. of 16 Bn went out stretcher bearing.

On Ap.11 out towards / barbed wire.
They were being sniped at & probly
all were killed.
They had to file thro the wire on Ap.1
thro a little pad.
The German Offr. sd. You mad
Englishmen to try & get thro wire like
tt - mad Englishmen. There are a
lot of your men hanging upon it.

He sd they hit 9 tanks out of 11.
He gave 4 or 5 wd a lecture abt Lt. Geo.
& / British govt. He sd Lt. Geo cd
have finished / war last year if
he had wanted to accept / good terms
we gave him.
Cpl. Jobs ws a very level
headed chap. they used to think -
now if we get back this may be
of some use.

At sick parades it ws duty or
hospital- no light duty
