ws turned on this.
This ws movement in
this directn.

At 10.50 Murray ws at.
X with L. Gunner watching,
when a shower of 20 bombs
came from dotted semicircle.
This wiped the bomb Sectn
at the Stop clean out
(7 of them). The men gave
along trench. Bombs
began to fall around L. Gunner
14
Wounded & dead mens
rifles & the rifles of Germans
were loaded & leant agst
trench. One Offr Lt Marper
(A Coy) ws told off specially
to send up S.O.S. when
necessary. His Sergt &
Cpl. & M.g. sergt had
to carry on w this if
he were hit.
26
15
He withdrew a bit,
climbed onto a high point
on parapet & fired overhead.
2nd Gun was at bend
just below (86) .(an old
German m.g. positn)
& 3rd gun abt 50 yds to
left. All 3 guns got onto
the attack.
The men of bombing
sectn who were left
called "Bombers Wanted"
^One of these Robertson grabbed 5
riflemen & directed
bombfire , himself working
the rifle grenades.
A barrage of rifle grenades
ws put behind them but
they were throwing more

being stronger. Men from
left of our trench had bn
brought down, &, as we
were being heavily pressed
abt 15 were put over
the top. The Germans
in front were bombing
from Z Y, a little
Sap wh showed as a
mound of earth.
(The Germans on right
of trench had reached old Sap
at abt T ).
Z Y ws out of
bomb range of our men
where they had bn driven
back to. They got out
where arrows are markd.
Germans were taken
unexpectedly. They didnt
get onto us with m.gs or
revolvers -
26
18
our men got into Z Y
with bayonet & bomb -
some only carried bombs -
& drove Germans out
both of Z Y & T.
This scrap seemed to
last ½ hour first & last -
¼ hr before they went over
top.
Cpl. Withers went out
on right agst T. The other
pty ws simply a c.att. by
the men.
After this there ws
quiet for ½ hr. In the
mean time Robertson had
got his block built
at "2 in order to get out
of bomb range from Z Y.X This ws abt 20 yds
further back.
There ws desultory
bombing there till 3 a.m.
26
19
The Germans shelled
where marked all night,
very heavily - & shelled
at Y when we beat
them back (probly to
prevent us following).
Abt 3 am. there
ws a lot of movement
up by Sunray Trench &
heavy shelling from 86 up
Corner to the left. S.O.S. ws
sent up by Marper
& arty cut this up.
There ws heavy bombing
on right but rifle grenades
beat this off.
This died after abt
10 mins. From 5 am. to
6.30 am our arty redoubled
their efforts (considering
this / dangerous time).
From the 3 am. attack
onwds there ws heavy continuous
bombing on right,

varying from a heavy shower
to an occasional bomb.
But Robertson had
reconnoitred the front,& we knew through all / little maze of saps (Murray ws
w him) & we knew where
to put our bombs.
By this time C. Coy
ws getting weak or the
O.C. wd probly have gone
up this maze & halfway
to (16). [The 14th had also
lost heavily on left].
Only Brown & Murray,
of those whose ^duty ws to moved up
& down trench, came out
unhit.
With daybreak
(exc. from 8 to 10 a.m.) The
Germans shelled very
heavily - but shells
were put right & left of
trench & not over it, very
few if any were hit.
After 10 a.m. the Germans
