& the 3rd near 01.
Bombing posts held the
commn trench in front as
before.
B Coy, did not reach their
objve. They got well over
but losses were very heavy
- almost all m.g. fire
from right.
C. Coy reached 1st objve &
half way to 2nd. No Germans
found in 1st obj. but Germans

Losses
A.Coy, came out 22 strong-
With 1 offr. Lt Marks

B.Patrick (who captured gun on 14 Aug) ws missing
near 03. 2 wounded incl. O.C.
Abt 15 or 20 Germans were
in trench.
Germans cd be seen carrying
m.gs away but rifles wd not
go off or we cd easily have
got them. No trouble w
/ bombs.. A big supply of bombs
ws taken - the bombers had
plenty.

were found between 1st and
2nd objve - in shellholes
etc. These were driven
back but heavy loss made
it impossible to hold on.
The m.gs on rt were in
Courcelette directn.
D Coy got their 1st Objve &
some reached the second, on
right. The losses there were
too heavy to hold on. They
got to 95. There were big
dugouts there. Not v. many
got back from there.
It ws decided to retire
on to original trench, defence
being organised by L.Gs & bombs,
rifles being useless thro mud.

officer in both stunts]
