who were coming up the
main hill, without losing
a minute & push them back
into the sea.
At the same time he
put the batteries in
position. One battalion only
in reserve (3rd).
At this time they were
only under / fire of the
warships.
First they met only
weak troops & pushed them
back.
[The 2 Bns ^of 27 Regt wh were W. of
Maidos had the orders to
send their troops straight to Maidos towds the sea. They
were in tt positn to resist a landing atmade move towds Gaba Tepe
106
89
They went straight twds the South of
K. Chemen Tepe, Kemal
leading - towds Chunuk Bair.
K. didn't know (prob.) where Ari B. was - (SEE below) but he
ws impressed w / importance of Koja Chemen Tepe (or Chunuk B -
wh is pract. the same.
Kemal pushed a company
abt 200 yds ahead of regt.
He went w them himself.
There, on [shorthand] the gullies
S of Chunuk Bair, about
81 l, they met Turkish soldiers in
retreat. These men told Mustafa Kemal
Pasha tt ^they had been pushed back & that numbers of
troops had landed abt Ari Burnu.
On / little maps wh they then had Ari Burnu wsnt
even marked - It had perh. bn named by the 27 Regt, garrison.
Decent maps
were being prepared
& it might have bn
on them but it
wsnt ready.
2 Bns were then ahead,
one in rear :
M. K. Bey had lost the
O.C. Regt (he had gone in another directn) He
gave the order direct to Zeki Bey that the Bn
must vigorously attack the troops
105
90
Mustafa Kemal Bey (later
Pasha) commandr 19th Divn.
The report said : "About one Bn has landed
at Ari B., & this battalion has
gone in the directn of Koja Chemen Tepe.
With this they asked him to send one battalion against
Ari B. from Boghali.
53rd ^(?57th) Regt that day had mustered
for a field day on the ground.
(esp towds 971). It ws at this
moment that the order came.
Mustafa Kemal Pasha
came himself & ordered the regiment with a
bty of artillery (mountain):
He sd if ^this force of English has gone in directn
of C. Chemen Tepe it is not
a demonstration. It is a real landing
For that reason he took the whole Regiment .

15th A.C. ws to S.
3rd A.C. ws to N.
There were gendarmes to N. & these

GOC 3rd A.C. - abt the
same time.
Essad Pasha & part of his staff
came from Gallipoli to Maidos
abt 10 a.m.
The 1st day reinfts were
not sent from Gallipoli because
Liman sd: "Its a demonstrn not
the true landing." Seeing the vessels
sail for Bulair he sd the real
landing will be at Bulair. For tt reeason
the troops were sent from Bulair tt day ^(? or Gallipoli).
Of 19th Divn. 57th Regt. was ^near Boghali. [But those on /
spot saw tt / ships from Anzac were empty before they sailed
for Bulair]. The other Regts (77th & 72nd) were

Constantinople,
20th May 1920.
My Honourable Sir,
As I have not had the opportunity of seeing you again, I
ought to give you the following explanations to complete and
correct the story related by heart, during our travels at Anzac.
1. - The first word of the Landing reached our Division at 5x5
5.30 a.m. from the 9th Division; but at first not clearly.
2. - The first engagement (fire) took place at 10.30 a.m.
3. - Our main attacks are as follows :-
(a) 25th April.
(b) 26th April. Your attack which forced us to retire
as far as Dus Tepe (Battleship Hill) on the right
flank and to Legge Valley (East of Lone Pine) on the
left flank, an unfavourable day for us at Anzac.
(no reserves in hand.)
(c) 27th April. Our second attack when we regained the
ground lost on 26th April.
(d) 1st May. Our third attack when we gained the last
positions.
(e) The attack of 19th May did not make much change in
the positions.
4. - On the evening of the 25th April the 77th Regiment made
the confusion told you. The 3rd Battalion of this Regiment had be
been sent on the 24th April to Suvla to replace the Gendarme
Battalion. This last named battalion had been sent on the 25th
April to Helles. The 72nd Regiment with two battalions, on the
evening of the 25th April were in reserve behind the right flnak
and following the Australian attack on the morning of 26th April
these two battalions came to the East of Lone Pine and stopped the
retirement. One battalion only of the 72nd Regiment reinforced
the right flank on the evening of the 25th April. To sum up the
confusion on the left flank was made by two battalions of the 77th
Regiment.
5. - The fight, in the ditch crater in front of my trenches, which I
related, ^took place on 29th June at 10.20 a.m. did
6. - At Kanli Sirt (Lone Pine) on the third day of the
deml
demonstration, we retook the head of the valley which I pointed
out on the ground (8th August), and on the 4th day (9th August)
I left with my battalion (Lone Pine) to go to the Edirne Sirt
(Mortar Ridge).
7. - At 5.50 p.m. on the day of the demonstration my battalion
received an order to go to Lone Pine. I believe I said at 2 p.m.
8. - Moustaf Kemal Bey had gone to Anafarta on the night of the
8/9th August. He attacked on the 9th August. On the night of
9/10th August he returned to Chunuk Bair. The attack on Chunuk
Bair was made early on 10th August. Thanks to this attach we
were able to force the Australians back to Chahin Sirt (Rhododendron Spur).
9. - On the 19th May the true losses of the 19th Division :-
339 killed
755 wounded
1094
At this rate the total does not exceed a maximum of
10,000.
I write to you recalling most honourable days for both sides
and at the same time seeing my poor country perish.
(sgd) Major Zeki.

l'ordre d'aller à lun pein.
il me semble que j'avait dit à
2 heures.
