There ws always an idea in
Liman Pasha's head: They will
attack in / N. The 1st landing
rather upset this; but still /
reserves were in the N.
Our submarines were
doing damage in Marmora – & sothey wanted to avoid / risk of their
communications being cut. The
army in Gallipoli knew tt there wd
be a landing by Kitchener's Army
- but not where -
The troops, ^in line didnt know that
we were landing. On Aug 6th
at midday the 1st Bn 57th ws
taken out of Merkez Tepe, & went
behind Mortar R. (Edina Tepe) having
bn 45 days in / line without relief

Maj. Zeki Bey noticed tt at
first the cries were enthusiastic
but later tragic. Lots of flares
were being thrown by our
side. The flares, he thinks, got
behind their men^& reinfts cdnt get to them. The regt
ws well dressed & well trained
- from Constant. It cdnt get back
its 2 m.gs. The Ts. who got
back sd tt they fell into
trap doors
The Bn (3/57) on / rt flank
ws ordered to attack as soon as
possible from Bomba Sirt.
The trenches were covered w planks.

abt this - what is / reason.
The Answer ws: Yes, tt Bn
at Bomba Sirt is going to
make an attack, & the
18th Regt at the head of
Monash Vally is going to attack -
(Everything had bn v. hurried).
Maj. Zeki Bey ws on the
Bomba Sirt side. Then he heard
the cry. Allah Allah & theregave came a few minutes
later / report tt the regt
wh had attacked at Jessaret
Tepe had got into the 1st line
of Aust. trenches & 2 m.gs., &
had reached the 2nd line - some
men had got into it. This
ws on telephone. This report

& there's nothing impt - it
is only a tempest."
In / meantime an order
had arrd & bn written down
by his adjt: "If the Austlns
attack make an attack &
meet them in Nomansland
w / bayonet."
He said tt obviously
now there ws no need for
an attack.
Some minutes later the
C.O. At Bomba Sirt (Quinns
Post) telephoned : "I have bn
ordered to attack - help
us in an hour or two & in
case of need with Enfilade
fire. Be prepared to help."

wh I dont believe but here
it is -" & repeated it.
Z. Bey didnt believe there ws
an attack because there ws
heavy fire, coming from our side
also. So he left his place ^he sd he wd go to the trench himself
& report. He went up & saw tt
there ws nothing impt. from
our side _ there ws no onex in

his trenches. Newspapers were blowing.
over wildly to their trench & /
soldiers gave them to him,
He recd them & returned - they
were papers of old date.
He telephoned: I went up myself

mtn guns to fire on such
an occasion – & they began.
It ws before midnight. No
reports had come in but the
Regtl Commdr ^(Ahuni Bey C.O. Rgt then) had asked
urgently for information. Probly
Kemal knowing what was planned
for / morning ws most anxious.
Ahuni Bey asked what has
happened. Zeki Bey sd: I don't
know - Its v. dark & there is a
loud noise.
At this moment a soldier
who had bn sent from the rt
front trench came w a report tt
the Austlns were advancing to

A great importance ws gvn
to this little success of the Turks.
Zeki Bey asked why. They sd
You dont know. It is important
Probably the S. troops had not
had a good time & it ws wanted to
have a success in / papers. The
young offr who beat / attack
in G.O.T. ws gn a medal.
[The "Gemish. Imtias" medal for Courage.]
It ws an ^important medal genly given to the
older officers.
The attack on night of 28/29
June followed on a tempest.
Zeki Bey thought at first tt
something had bn done in / way
of a mine - or an artificial
dust cloud. They cd see the flares

o / warships here; & also
if they had a small success
they cd push us into / sea. For
tt reason this Zone ws chosen
for / attack.
Mining began after this. (See
field notes).
They cd see our periscopes
often over the top.
The Ts. had a gun dug in in /
early days behind L. Pine; later
behind J.Jolly. It shot N. The
Pine gun ws later removed.
On the day when / Austlns fought
in the craters at G.O.T. there were
bayonets seen opp. the left flank
of G.O.T. & ^on J. Jolly & it ws reported
tt / Eny. were going to make
an attack. Z/Bey doesnt think
